SARATOGA RESULTS 8/29/20

A rough day with the selections yesterday in the final five races at Saratoga. I gave you 26 horses to consider, we had one scratch, so the total ended up 25. Out of those, I had two winners, four seconds and four thirds. That 40% "in the money" percentage is nothing to brag about. Out of the 15 possible payout spots, I had ten of them for a 66% success rate.

Race Seven started well enough, as I took the top three in the finishing order in the Amsterdam. Yaupon look like the real deal, winning at 7/5 odds.

Race Eight wasn't as good. I gave you six to consider and couldn't get any of them in the money. Win Win Win got the win here and went off at 7-1 odds.

Race Nine got me again, as far as the winner went, I finished second and third with my picks. Channel Maker looked good in trouncing the field and rewarded backers at 8-1 odds.

Race Ten brought success as I covered the top three finishers. Spun d'Etat went off at 5/2 odds and out-dueled Jouster for the victory.

Race eleven closed out the day of near misses. Bustin Scones upset heavy favorite Eloquent Spender to close the card. A nice return at 7-1.

The sloppy main track conditions and wet turf yesterday at Saratoga no doubt affeced some of the picks I made. What started out as a muddy track got worse and my handicapping was for a fast track, so -- that's how it goes somedays.

So, we'll see ya Tuesday with a week of Churchill! I'd normally be excited to have them back in Louisville, but with no fan attendance mandates in place, it'll be a bit different. I'm tired of 202o...how about you?

SARATOGA PICKS 8/29/20

Today will be my last day of handicapping the New York track for the summer, with action returning to Churchill next week, Oaks, Derby and all that -- I'll concentrate on Kentucky.

A challenging card, though, at Saratoga today with three Grade I races, beginning with Race 7.

RACE 7 -- AMSTERDAM STAKES -- GI -- 150K -- SIX FURLONGS

3 -- LONG WEEKEND

2 -- YAUPON

1 -- BASIN

4 -- PREMIER STAR

(ALSO CONSIDER #5WONDRWHERECRAIGIS)

RACE 8 -- FOREGO STAKES -- GI -- 300K -- SEVEN FURLONGS

2 -- WHITMORE

4 -- FUNNY GUY

11 -- MIND CONTROL

8 -- FIRENZE FIRE

(ALSO CONSIDER #3 LEXITONIAN AND #11 FORTIN HILL)

RACE 9 -- SWORD DANCER STAKES -- GI -- 500K -- 1-1/2 MILES (TURF)

8 -- SADLER'S JOY

2 -- AQUAPHOBIA

1 -- HIGHLAND SKY

6 -- CROSS BORDER

RACE 10 -- MAIDEN -- 72K -- SIX FURLONGS

8 -- SPUN D' ETAT

9 -- ROOKERY

2 -- ALWAYS CARINA

3 -- JOUSTER

(ALSO CONSIDER -- #6 PEACHEY QUEEN, #7 O' GOTTEN GIRL)

RACE 11 -- ALLOWANCE 64K -- 6-1/2 FURLONGS

3 -- ELOQUENT SPEAKER

6 -- FLASHPAKIN BARBIE

7 -- MIDNIGHT SURPRISE

1 -- KINKY SOX

(ALSO CONSIDER -- #8 MISS JIMMY)

The play:

It would be a VERY expensive Pick 5 sequence, but will probably pay huge if you hit it. I'm way up on the track for the meet, but I experimented with a .50 cent Pick 5 and it cost over $1000! I'm probably going to just venture a couple of Pick 3's -- Races 7,8,9 and then Races 9,10,11. Need to save some money for Derby Week, you know... Play 'em anyway you like!

Next week -- DERBY WEEK -- I'll be quite busy here on the site -- giving you key races to consider on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thurby, Oaks and Derby. Be sure to check backthose five days!

SARATOGA RESULT FROM 8/23/20

Well...we gave the ol' Empire Six a try yesterday and hit five of the six races. Race 5 proved to be the downfall with the highest odds on the board getting the win and I didn't have him.

It happens.

I'm still "up" on the Saratoga for the meet and for 2020 overall.

This Saturday will be my last selections for Saratoga. Churchill springs into action the following Tuesday and I'll give you coverage on all five days of the opening week card out at the ol' Twin Spires.

SARATOGA PICKS -- 8/23-20

Saratoga is offering a mandatory payout on their Empire 6 today, so, with yesterday's success, I'll invest a share of my profits back into the .20 Pick Six wager.

RACE 4

2 -- NO SALT

RACE 5

2 -- UNRELENTING FORCE

5 -- SIX PERCENT

6 -- TOO EARLY

7 -- COLD HARD CASH

RACE 6

1 -- TOWERING GAZE

2 -- HIGH SCHOOL CRUSE

6 -- MIA BEA STAR

RACE 7

1 -- BIG ENGINE

2 -- LOVE ROCK

6 -- PETE'S PLAY CALL

7 -- MOUNT TRAVERS

RACE 8

3 -- RUSHING FALL

5 -- SISTEERCHARLIE

6 -- MEAN MARY

RACE 9

2 -- RINGGOOD

3 -- ALLIED INVASION

5 -- NERO'S FIDDLE

6 -- AINTITFUNKYNOW

THE PLAY:

The cost is about $115 to play it the way I structured it and we'll hope for a little luck early by using a single to start it out. Any time you get a 3/5 odds horse in a maiden claimer race in the opening leg, it's almost like playing a Pick 5.  Yes, Saratoga is the graveyard of the favorites but I just don't see it happening in Race 4. I've got coverage the rest of the way and I'll hope for the best.

SARATOGA RESULTS 8/22/20

Despite all the scratches on yesterday's Saratoga card, I did some selection scrambling and changing and managed to take down the late Pick 4. The .50 wager on it paid $285.00, so it was another profitable day.

I gave you 21 horses originally to consider. Scratches knocked that down to 18. Out of those 18, I had four winners, four seconds and three thirds. That's a 61% "in the money" percentage. When you consider there were a total of 12 "payable" spots available and I hit 11 of them, I'll take the 92% success rate there.

In Race Seven, the scratch of Lonesome Fugitive changed the whole nature of the race, but, I gave you Kingmeister and he was dominant against the rest. He went off at 3-2 odds, but was not the favorite. In fact, no favorites got the job done in the four race closing sequence -- adding credence to the saying that "Saratoga is the graveyard of favorites". Plot the Dots went off as the favorite and ran second.

Race Eight saw the populace load up on the 1-1A entry of Legit and Blewit, but it was 5-1 Seaform who had the stretch move to pass them all. The entry favorites ran 2nd and 3rd. My original top pick, It's All Relevant, was a scratch and that dramatically changed the nature of the race.

Race Nine, the FourStarDave, had a spectacular field, including four entries from Chad Brown, but it was Todd Pletcher's Halladay at 5-1 who got the best of the field. Uni was my top pick and never got interested in the race. You have to admire the effort of second place finisher Got Stormy, he came flying at the end but just didn't have enough to catch Halladay.

Race Ten was a race where I went deep. I'm glad I did. The prohibitive favorite, Rakeez, scratched out of the race. That cause a dramatic change in the betting and dropped a horse I considered an "keep an eye on" swquence addition to drop to 3-1 odds. Letterman got it done, though, and completed the Pick 4 for me.

Saratoga has a mandatory payout on the popular Empire six today, where you try and select the winners out the final six races. It's a .20 cent wager and, obviously, a tough prize to capture. Since I'm up in profits on Saratoga, I'll give it a try and post my picks here later today.

SARATOGA RESULTS 8/15/20

A promsing late Pick 4 yesterday at Saratoga turned on its eaar and demolished when 36-1 shot Freedom and Whisky made a late move in the stretch, split horses and got the win. That's horse racing and always a possibility in maiden claiming events. I thought my coverage was solid, I was five "deep" in the race but ran second, third and fourth.

On the day I gave you 17 horses in the four race sequence that I thought had a chance of "hitting the board". Out of those, I had three winners, three seconds and three thirds. That's a 53% "in the money" percentage and I cover nine of the 12 "payout" slots for a 75% success rate.

In Race 8, the hot hand of Irad Ortiz, Jr continued when Domestic Spending held off hard-charging Gufo at the wire to get the win and pay $16.40.

How about Swiss Skydiver in the Alabama Stakes in Race 9 !! She proved she can be a viable foe in the upcoming Kentucky Oaks against Gamine and ...maybe...Speech with her five-length (or better) win. She simply said "Bye Bye" to the field in the sttretch and paid $4.30 to win as the even money favorite.

Race 10 was a battle that New York's Finest eventually won in knocking off favorite Shiraz and Maxwell Esquire. That turned out to be a nice exacta and trifecta for you if you went those routes and the winner returned $15.20

Then...the final. Credit to the winner Freedom and Whisky for finding that hole to get through in the stretch and nose past Mommie's Jewel and Bricco. I thought I had the Pick 4 until the final furlong.

The Pick 4 paid a whopping $3185.25 on the .50 cent ticket with numbers 4-5-5-10

We'll try again next week.

In the final (Race 11) I'll get that security and go five deep with the ones I listed.

ELLIS PARK RESULTS 8/9/20

A successful day in playing the late Pick 5 at Ellis Park yesterday!

I outlined my selections for the sequence and hit it for a payout of $892 on the $1 version of it.

The sequence cost me $240 to play, so a nice profit and it goes to prove what i've said here before...you have to spend a little money sometimes to make a little money.

In the final leg and feature at Ellis yesterday, Art Collector was much the best in the Kentucky Derby qualifier Ellis Park Derby and won wire-to-wire. Whether he's got what it takes to run with Tiz The Law or not remains to be seen, but, he definitely put his name out there as one to be considered.

I started the sequence in Race Six with five horses. One could joke and say it was a "beautiful" day at Ellis...Crazy Beautiful...one of my picks won the Debutante Stakes and paid $7.00 to win.

The "beautiful" day continued in Race 7. I put four horses in this leg and one of my picks -- Big Beautiful Wall crossed the wire first -- returning $11.00 to win.

On to Race Eight. would the "beautiful" day continue? Hello Beautiful was one of my three picks for the Audubon Oaks, but another of my picks -- Mondaye Call -- ended up the winner at 2-1 odds, paying $6.40.

In the ninth race -- the Groupie Doll Stakes -- there were no "beautiful" choices, but I included a couple of "ladies" in my picks and one of them -- Lady Kate -- got the win at 4-1 odds and paid $10.00 to win.

I debated how to play the Ellis Park Derby. If I had gone with a .50 cent sequence, I probably could have gone deeper, but, I just didn't think any of the other contenders could beat Art Collector, so I "singled" the odds-on favorite -- something I rarely do in the final leg multi-race wagers. it turned out OK. Brian Hernandez, Jr. pretty much just turned the horse loose, kept him interested and took the lead shortly after the break. He drew away from Attachment Rate as they hit the stretch and Brian had him under wraps at the end.

1:48 for the 1-1/8th mile race? How impressive is that! Consider the track record is 1:47:60...set back in 1988 by Lt. Lao. Brian never went to the whip in the stretch, just rode him out and he pulled away on his own.

So...$240 got me $892. I'll take it.

Does the winner of the Blue Grass and now the Ellis Park Derby have a shot at Belmont and Travers winner Tiz The Law in the Kentucky Derby?

"Artie" is probably your second choice I guess, in the scheme of things -- but this handicapper will add Art Collector to his collection in any Derby Race wagers.

SARATOGA RESULTS 8/8 -- ELLIS PARK PICKS -- 8/9

A good day for handicapping yesterday at Saratoga! I outlined the late Pick 5 for you and hit it for $382.75.

I gave you 21 horses to consider over the five races. Out of those, I had five winners, four places and five shows. That's a 67% "in the money percentage. If you look at the 15 possible payout slots in the five races, I filled 93% of those. True, the fields were smallish, but, consider that no favorites won in the first three races of the sequence.

I outlined two different ways to play the sequence and both were successful.

Race 7 was a battle between Serengeti Empress and Bellafina. Serengeti Empress got the win but both horses showed why they are consider among the best in the older fillies and mares racing today. Serengeti paid $8.30 to win as the second favorite. I gave you the exacta and trifecta.

Race 8 is  where we caught a little luck that would bump the payout up. Inprimis was clearly the best but got disqualified and placed third because of a bit of bumping in the stretch. That gave American Sailor the win and moved up Shekky Shebaz.to second. THe wnner paid a handsome $16.80 to win and I had the exacta and  trifecta again.

Race 9 was a bit of a surprise for some when My Sister Nat got the win over Ms Sippy and Fool's Gold. As my top pick, My Sister Nat paid $6.90 and we had the exacta and trifecta again.

Race 10 belonged to Gamine. Venetian Harbor tried but was no match for the best three-year old filly racing today. The odds bore out she was the right choice, if you singled here, good for you. Gamine paid $2.60 to win and I provided the exacta and trifecta again.

Race 11 proved that Tiz The Law is the probable odds-on Kentucky Derby favorite. He romped these at 1/2 odds and paid $3.00 to win, Max Player (3rd) and Uncle Chuck tried but just didn't have it in the stretch.

********************************************************************************************************

A huge card at Ellis Park today, ending with the Ellis Park Derby. I looked at the final five races in this VERY FULL card of races and wondered how to play it. I still haven't decided, so I'm just going to outline my top four and give you "an extra to consider" in the first four.

With big fields and very warm conditions today at Ellis, there are scratch possibilities, so check back later and I'll try to make the necessary changes..

3 -- UNCLE CHUCK

4 -- MAX PLAYER

8 -- SOUTH BEND

Today's strategy:

It's a .50 cent Pick 5 and I'm "up" on Saratoga for the meet, so let's make sure I've got sufficient coverage. Especially in the earlier races.

Race 7 -- My top four picks:  1,3,4,7

Race 8 -- My top four picks plus #4 (Shekky Shebaz)  1,2,4,5,7

Race 9 -- My top four picks:  1,4,5,7

Race 10 -- Going with Gamine and Venetian Harbor:  5,6

Race 11 -- Going with Tiz the Law, Uncle Chuck and Max Player 3,4,6

The wager $240. Of course, you can "lighter this up a bit and just single Gamine and Tiz the Law to get out for a mere $40. I just want the coverage and, remember, Saratoga is the "graveyard of favorites"

Good luck today!

SARATOGA RESULTS -- 8/1/20

A good day in chasing the late Pick 4 at Saratoga yesterday. True to the track's nickname of being "the graveyard of favorites" none of the favorites won in any of the final four races. Actually, that's not exactly true...in Race 11 Sadler's Joy did win but was disqualified after an inquiry and objection from bumping in the stretch and placed fourth.

I outlined nineteen horses to play in the final four races. Out of those, I had four winners, three seconds and three thirds. That's a 53% "in the money" percentage. Out of the 12 "payable" slots available in the four races, we filled 10 of them, for a sizzling 62.5% percentage.

The Late Pick Four paid $362.50, so it was a nice profit of about $200 if you played my picks.

Race 9 --  Improbable ran past them all in the stretch to win convincingly in the featured race of the day, the Whitney Handicap. By My Standards set the pace but was no match for Improbable in the stretch, finishing second. Tom's d'Etat stumbled out of the gate and blew any chances of winning, the favorite getting third. Improbable paid $8.50 to win, the exacta $38 and the trifecta $80.  A nice way to start the day.

Race 10 -- Echo Town pulled the minor upset in thee Allen Jerkins Handicap. He dueled with Tap It To Win for the win. Echo Town paid $11.40 to win. Race favorite No Parole tried to run with the front runners but backed up badly in the stretch and finished out of the money. The exacta paid a nice $81.40. Unfortunately, I did not hit the trifecta here, but it was worth a whopping $670

Race 11 -- Cross Border  was placed first after the objection/inquiry in the Bowling Green Stakes and returned $6.40 as the second favorite. I had him and the third place horse Channel Maker but couldn't come up with second place finisher, 15-1 Highland Sky.. Favorite Sadler's Joy was placed fourth after causing the ruckus in the stretch.

Race 12 -- I always advice "go deep so you won't weep" in the final leg of Pick's Four sequences and it paid off yesterday. One of my "also consider" horses -- Cariba -- got the win.by nosing past another of my "also consider" horses Jakarta to win. Sweet Bye and Bye was a close third -- this one was wide open as they hit the stretch in the Caress Stakes on the turf. Cariba was bet down to 4-1 (someone knew something) and paid $10.40 to win. A $117 exacta was your reward if you had the "9-5"  and the trifecta got you a huge $961.

As it was pointed out to me, a $2 trifecta box of all seven of my picks in the race would have cost $672...so you could have made an additional $290.

The Travers next week, another huge race -- we'll give it and the late Pick 4 a try next Saturday.

So, a fun few hours and making money for a Saratoga Saturday. We'll go for it again next week.

SARATOGA PICKS -- 8/1/20

A huge day at Saratoga today, with four stakes races in the last four races, so that's where I'm headed with today's picks. It's a Pick Four also, so play it accordingly.

RACE 9 -- WHITNEY (GI) -- $750K -- 1-1/8th miles

5 -- Tom's d ' Etat
2 -- Improbable
3 -- Code of Honor
1 -- By My Standards

RACE 10 -- ALLEN JERKINS STAKES (GI) -- $300K -- 7 furlongs

6 -- No Parole
11 -- Tap It To Win
4 -- Echo Town
2 -- Eight Rings

RACE 11 -- BOWLING GREEN STAKES (GII) -- $250K -- 1-3/8th miles (TURF)

6 -- Sadler's Joy
3 -- Channel Maker
4 -- Dot Matrix
2 -- Cross Border

RACE 12 -- CARESS STAKES -- $200K -- 5-1/2 furlongs (TURF)

7 -- Palika
2 -- I'llhandalthecash
6 -- Mother Mother
3 -- Sweet Bye and Bye

Betting strategy:

I'm going to take my top four picks in Race 9, my top three picks in Race 10, my top four picks in Race 11 and go deep in Race 12 -- with my top four picks, plus adding #4 Introduced, #5 Jakarta and #9 Cariba.

The Ticket:

1,2,3,5
4,6,11
2,4,5,6
2,3,4,5,6,7

Cost $168.

I'm "up" on Saratoga, so I can put out a little more $$$$. If you want to "trim" your ticket, you might just single Tom's d' Etat in Race 9 and get out of the sequence with a $42 ticket. I'm going with the ol' philosophy that "Saratoga is the graveyard of favorites" and I want to make sure I'm still "alive" after Race 9.

Good luck today!
