HANDICAPPING HEROES -- CHURCHILL DOWNS --RESULTS FROM 9/29/18

The Handicappers took on racing under the stars at Churchill Downs Saturday night with a run at the challenging late Pick 4 sequence and took it down. Although the payout wasn't extremely high, as we say here, we can just predict the winners...we can't choose the payouts...

Here's the replay:  https://soundcloud.com/chradio/handicapping-heroes-2018-09-29

PAULIE gave you 16 horses and 15 went forward. Out of those he had three winners, a second and four thirds. That's a 53% "in the money" percentage. He also added the early Pick 3 to his totals. PAULIE FINISHES THE DAY WITH 18 POINTS.

HOLLYWOOD also had 15 break from the gate. He gave us three winners, a place and three shows. Chalk him up for an exacta and the early Pick 3 as well. He ended up with a 46% "in the money percentage. HOLLYWOOD ENDS UP WITH 19 POINTS.

ARCHIE had all 16 of his picks go. Archie provided four winners, one second and four thirds. Archie also gave us an exacta, trifecta, both Pick 3's in the sequence and the Pick 4! That's a 56% "in the money" percentage. ARCHIE TAKES THE DAY WITH A DOMINATING 33 POINTS,

Tonight the Handicappers take on night racing at Churchill Downs...the Downs After Dark -- so to speak. A fine night of racing, including our late Pick 4 that includes a couple of Grade III races, and an interesting Arabian affair.

We don't handicap the Arabians very often and this one is a Grade I, so they must be pretty special.
Everything is on Churchill's "dirt" tonight in the sequence and first race starts at 6 p.m. Whether Paulie gets over there after football remains to be seen...

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM CHURCHILL DOWNS LATE PK 4 -- 9/22/18

The Handicappers took on the late Pick 4 at Churchill Downs Saturday. A track that had devolved into sloppy conditions. We had some successes but, at least speaking for myself, handicapped the races for a fast track. We record the show early Saturday morning, so we don't exactly know what the track will be like later that afternoon.

A huge surprise in race 10, when Calvin Borel guided massive long-shot DIVINE QUEEN through the field and down the rail to win. An over $100 payout on a $2 wager there. We didn't have it between the three of us.

Handicapping for wet weather involves a bit more study. You look for horses that have run in the slop and how they've done. Any races on the track they're running on that day...you pay particular attention to. A look at Divine Queen shows us that, although she had never run on a "off track", she did have a win at Churchill with Borel on board the only time that she had run at Churchill.

With these two-year old fillies, we see that, upon further review, only (2) of them had ever tried the sloppy going. #7 EveryoneLovesJimmy tried the slop once (at Churchill) lifetime and won the race. That would have been a logical choice, but the filoy did not hit the board yesterday. The #10 Naples Legacy had run three times on an off-track and never hit the board, including an eighth-place finish at Churchill back in late June. Once again, she did not hit the board.

So, sometimes the "angle" works, sometimes it doesn't...but it remains a useful handicapping tool.

Let's see how the guys did yesterday:

HOLLYWOOD had 14 of his 16 picks break from the gate, with two scratches. Out of those, he had two winners, one second and two thirds. That's a 36% "in the money" percentage. He also had one exacta. HE FINISHED THE SEQUENCE WITH 12 POINTS.

PAULIE had 15 of his 16 picks remain in the races, with one scratch. He gave us three winners, three places and a show. That's a 47% "in the money" percentage. He also gave us two exactas, including a huge one in race 11 that paid $136.40 on a $2 wager. PAULIE ALMOST TOPS ARCHIE WITH 20 POINTS IN THE SEQUENCE.

ARCHIE saw all 16 of his picks try the dirt with no scratches. He produced three winners, three seconds and two shows. He also gave us two exactas, with a nice one in Race 8 that paid $64 on a $2 investment. HE EDGES OUT PAULIE FOR THE TOP SPOT IN THE CONTEST WITH A TOTAL OF 21 POINTS.

Even though we did not hit either Pick 3 or the Pick 4, we still gave out some nice payouts via the exactas.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- CHURCHILL DOWNS -- RESULTS LATE PICK 4 -- 9/15/18

The Handicappers fired away at the late Pick 4 at Churchill Downs and had some nice successes. Although they didn't hit the Pick 4, or either of the pick threes in the sequence, they gave you some nice winners. Race 10 and Brian Hernandez, Jr on Cairo Cat...at 17-1 was the culprit that ruined their Pick 4 party.

Let's see how they did:

ARCHIE saw 15 out of his 16 break from the gate and, out of those, he gave you three winners, four places and one show. That's a 53% "in the money" percentage and he had eight of the possible twelve best finishers innthe four races. Give him three exactas as well. NOT A BAD EFFORT AT ALL FOR THE BREAD GUY, HE ENDS UP WITH 24 POINTS.

HOLLYWOOD had all 16 of his picks run down the stretch and from those he accumulated three winners, four seconds and one show. He hits 50% "in the money numbers. He also gave out three exactas and a trifecta. A NICE RUN FOR HIS MONEY TODAY, OUR APPRENTICE FINISHES WITH 27 POINTS

PAULIE gave you 16 picks and they all got a call. He also had three winners...plus four seconds and two shows for a 57% "in the money" ratio. Out of the 12 possible money spots, he grabbed nine of them. He also gave you three exactas and two trifectas. PAULIE TAKES THE DAY WITH AN IMPRESSIVE 31 POINTS.

Sometimes, we tend to overlook things on a form or sheet that make sense AFTER the race. One could have easily played Cairo Cat in the 10th race. Good jockey, won his last race at Saratoga and turned in a bullet work preparing for this one. The bettors ignored him also, his 8-1 morning line odds drifted up to 17-1. As our co-founder and friend the late Scotty Harris used to say, always watch Brian Hernandez, Jr at Churchill. We watched him yesterday. We watched him beat us.

WE live and learn.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- KENTUCKY DOWNS -- RESULTS FROM LATE PICK 4 --9/8/18

The races took place yesterday at Kentucky Downs on what was classified as a "good" turf for the riders and horses.

It was also a "good" day for the Handicapping Heroes crew...they din't hit the late Pick 4 but gave you the late Pick 3 and winners in all the races except the seventh.

Let's see how they did.

HOLLYWOOD had 15 break from the gate with one scratch. Out of those, he gave you two winners, two seconds and a third. That's a 33% "in the money" percentage.  He also provided an exacta and trifecta. Not a bad second outing for our newest handicapper. HOLLYWOOD finishes with 16 points for the day.

ARCHIE also had 15 try the turf and one scratch. He gave you one winner, two places and one show. He ends with a 27% "in the money" number. Add an exacta, trifecta and superfecta to his totals also. He completely owned the 8th. race. ARCHIE noses out Hollywood for second place in the points total with 17 points for the four race sequence.

PAULIE brought his "A" game to the handicapping contest yesterday. All 16 of his started and he gave you three winners, three seconds and a third. That's a 43% in the money percentage and seven out of the possible 12 money payout slots available (58%)in the four races. He also correctly handicapped two exactas and a trifecta...plus the late Pick 3. PAULIE splashes home in the rain much the best with 26 points to take yesterday's contest.

WE give you winners. That's what we do here. WE apologize for continued technical glitches concerning the "live" broadcast...but Paulie was able to give out the handicappers picks "live" in the studio following The Cardinal Couple Radio Hour. He also posted the original recording
of the show in yesterday's Handicapping Heroes selections. Listen for yourself.  I think I may have discovered the source of the "clicking" and "static". The test run sound pretty clear. WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN NOR GIVE UP. That's how we roll. Scott never would have and we won't either...

HANDICAPPING HEROES --RESULTS FROM KENTUCKY DOWNS -- LATE PICK 4 -- 9/1/18

The Handicappers tried their skills at boutique track Kentucky Downs yesterday. Opening day at the European-style race track that features only turf racing during its short meet. Turf racing or the cards must have agreed with the boys...hey produced some great results that included hitting both Pick 3's in the sequence and the late Pick 4. True, it was a day of favorites at the end of the card, but as our mentor and friend Scott Harris used to say:

"We can pick the horses but we can't pick what they're going to pay us."

With Hollywood joining us for the handicapping duties...Paulie and Archie took aim on the course that has the uphill stretch. Here's how they did:

HOLLYWOOD gave us 16 runners and one scratched. Out of the 15 that ran, he had three winners, a place and three shows. He also provided us with an exacta and trifecta in his picks. That's a 46% "in the money" percentage.  HOLLYWOOD MAKES HIS DEBUT HERE WITH 19 POINTS

PAULIE also saw 15 of his leave the starting gate, suffering one scratch. From those, he had four winners, a second and two thirds. That's a 46% "in the money' percentage also.  In addition, he gave out one exacta, both Pick 3's in the sequence and the Pick 4. A NICE DAY FOR PAULIE AND HE FINISHES WITH 28 POINTS.

ARCHIE sent 15 forward and did quite well. Four winners, two seconds and two thirds. A 53% "in the money" number for him. Chalk him up two exactas, both Pick 3's and the Pick 4 over the four-race sequence. ARCHIE TAKES THE POINT TOTAL HOME WITH A VERY STRONG 32 POINTS.

Handicapping presents one a lot of options but the ultimate one is to pick winners. The Handicappers did that quite well yesterday.

To hear a replay of yesterday's show, go to the link below. We apologize on the sound quality over the second half of the broadcast, we re working with the WCHQ technicians to get rid of that annoying "clicking" sound.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- SELECTIONS FOR KENTUCKY DOWNS -- 9/1/18

Today the Handicappers take on the opening day of racing at Kentucky Downs.

R.I.P. Brother Scott
They do so with a heavy heart. We had two major losses over the week. SCOTTY HARRIS, who was an integral part of this site and our radio show, passed away last Saturday. He came up with the idea for the venue here and the radio show back in 2014 and remained faithful, energized and encouraging about us until the end. He was 47. Then, on Monday Churchill Downs spokesman JOHN ASHER left this world. John was Churchill Downs, as popular as the Twin Spires, the Kentucky Derby or anything else related to the track.

Both will be greatly missed and we dedicate our efforts today and in the future to the two bright and shining lights these two men provided.

We bring on board "HOLLYWOOD". Nahshon Tanner is a bright, young handicapper who has impressed us with his skills and successes. No one can ever replace Scott, but we'll look to Hollywood as an addition that we know Scott would have been proud of and in favor of joining us.

Archie and I welcome Hollywood into the fold while sadly saying "See you further on down the road" to Scott and John.
