HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FOR SARATOGA LATE PICK 4 -- 7/28/18

The Handicappers took on the challenging late Pick 4 at Saratoga Saturday and met with some very good racing luck. As it goes up at the "Spa", sometimes favorites fail to fire...as we saw in the ninth race when huge morning line long shot Glorious Empire (Julian Leparoux) at 20-1 managed to dead-heat with morning line 10-1 runner Channel Maker (Joel Rosario) for the win. Big favorite Hi Happy failed to hit the board and Money Multiplier scratched out of the race.

Here's the Handicappers numbers.

ARCHIE had 15 out of his 16 picks go out of the gate. Of those, he had three winners, two seconds and two thirds. That's a 47% "in the money" ratio. He also gave out two exactas. ARCHIE ends up with 19 points, based on our scoring system.

PAULIE also had 15 of his 16 compete. He gave you four winners, two seconds and three shows. That's a sizzling 60% "in the money" percentage. When you figure the best anyone could do in the sequence is have all twelve of the win, place or show finishes...that is 75% .(9 of 12). He also gave out two exactas, a trifecta, both Pick 3's and the Pick 4. PAULIE had a very nice day with 36 points.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FOR SARATOGA LATE PICK 4 -- 7/21/18

Two of the Handicappers took on the second day of racing at Saratoga and did not fare so badly. It takes a bit of time, usually to pick up trends and "hot" trainers and jockeys at any track. Yesterday, in the Late Pick 4, four different jockeys won and only Brad Cox had multiple victories as a trainer in the sequence with two wins. Trainng wise,  Pletcher, Asmussen, Brown, Casse, Donk, Henning, Jerkens, Lukas, McGaughey, McPeek, Motion, Rice, Romans, Servis, Stall, Ward and Wilkes --and that doesn't even scraatch the surface. Say what you will about West Coast and Del Mar (and it's all good out there as well). the best and brightest are in eastern New York.

Here's how the Handicapper's did:

PAULIE gave you sixteen horses he thought might hit the board and six managed to. 37.5% in the money.  He had two winners, two places and two shows. Give him two exactas on the day as well. An OK start to a tough first week of Handicapping at the Spa and he finished with 16 points.

ARCHIE also provided 16 horses to watch and out of those seven got you paid. 43% in the money. Archie had three winners, two seconds and two thirds. He also hit an exacta and the late Pick 3. A nice $102.50 payout on that late Pick 3 for the dollar. ARCHIE takes the contest today with 20 points.

Such is the chance one takes when they take on the best. Ortiz's, Geroux, Leparoux, Castellano, Velazquez, Saez, Rosario and Santana. One heck of a starting nine, right? A Hall-of-Fame riders' contingent, for sure.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FOR ELLIS PARK -- 7/14/18

The Handicappers took on the late pick 4 at Ellis Park (races 6-9) on Saturday and, despite some key scratches, had a very good day. It was incredibly hot down at "the Pea Patch"...and some trainers did not want to run their owners' horses in such extreme conditions, but...the card was still very competitive and entertaining to watch. The horses' health and well-being is the main concern, as always. Archie predicted on the radio that Corey Lanerie might have a big day, and he did...with two winners in the four race sequence.

Here's how they did:

ARCHIE gave us 16 horses he handicapped and, out of those, nine of them made it to the starting gate. He had three winners, a second and a third. That's a 56% in the money percentage. He also hit an exacta and the early Pick 3 with those who ended up running. ARCHIE ends up with 17 points.

SCOTT looked at these four races and ended up having 10 of his 16 selections breaking from the gate. A good day for Scott, with three winners, one second and two thirds. A 60% in the money percentage. He also added an exacta, trifecta and superfecta to his totals. A nice return to handicapping for SCOTT with 22 points for the sequence.

PAULIE had 10 of his 16 picks start. He had four winners and a second. That's a 50% in the money percentage. He also hit an exacta, both Pick 3's and the Pick 4. The pick 4 paid $223 and he spent $18 to hit it. PAULIE wins the the day with a strong 26 points.

CUMULATIVE TOTALS:

ARCHIE    265
PAULIE     243
SCOTT      240

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM BELMONT LATE PK 5 -- 7/7/18

The Handicappers met the competitive Pick Five at Belmont on Saturday and had big success in handicapping the races. Paulie and Archie, combined, gave you all five winners. Playing their combined picks would have cost you $512 but returned $7600.25 !!

That's equal to hitting at 14-1 shot. One could have even taken the handicappers top two picks in each race and just bet those and got out for $216 and still hit it. That's like having a 35-1 hit first place for you.

To score on big days like this, sometimes you have to risk a rather expensive outlay to receive a significant return. It's called gambling. Many handicappers avoid the multi-race sequence wagers and concentrate on win, place, show or exacta and trifecta attempts. High risk, high reward is available most of the time, though, in the Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5 attempts.

Don't get me wrong here. I've seen huge multi-race sequences hit on very minimal tickets. I've seen huge tickets lose or return less than the original investment. I've also heard the lament "Oh, if we had only included 'that' horse. He was third in my picks for that race!" Syndicates can help defray individual costs but syndicates can also disagree in the final selections and really jack a price up or have people drop out because they aren't satisfied with either the cost or the selections.

As our handicapping partner Scott says: "We can pick the winners but we can't choose the prices."

To each his own. Always remember to "bet within your personal limits" and set a budget.

Here's how "A&P" did yesterday.

ARCHIE had four winners in the five race sequence. He also had three seconds, three thirds, two exactas, two trifectas. Although none of his top picks took a race, his selections were still very accurate. ARCHIE FINISHES THE DAY WITH 31 POINTS.

PAULIE also gave you four winners yesterday. Three places and two shows also. "No service Paulie" tacked on three exactas, two trifectas and the early Pick 3 of the sequence. In his top picks...Catholic Boy, Athena and Limousene Liberal hit the wire first. PAULIE TAKES THE COMPETITION WITH 35 POINTS.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM CHURCHILL DOWNS 6/30/18

The Handicappers did their best in taking on the late Pick 4 (races 9-12) on closing
day for the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs but were just short in taking it down.

They did come up with three winners in the four race sequence but race 10 stumped them
and none of them could come up with the winner (#9 CZ Rocket). A look back at his
past performances and running style indicates one of us at least should have given the horse,
trainer and jockey a bit of respect...but, as they say, hind-site is always 100% .

Some key scratches in races 9-11 really threw a wrench into the picks. That's horse-racing. If a horse can't go, you don't run him or her.

Still , a good day. Here's the numbers:

SPANKY'S guest appearance and picks had some ups and downs...but we appreciate him
filling in for Scott Harris...who we hope to have back soon. Spanky gave us (2) winners in
his selections and a show. SPANKY debuts with seven points.

PAULIE went after the sequence with what he thought was a solid list of potential winners. Out of those who did run, he gathers (2) winners, (1) second and (2) shows. Once again, second best and PAULIE ended the day with ten points.

ARCHIE explained his picks on the Handicapping Heroes broadcast and did hand out (3) winners in the final four races. He also had (1) place and (2) shows  and hit a nice exacta as well. He left the competition behind again and takes first places with 15 points.

Paulie also offered a few selections for Races 7 & 8...the first two in the mandatory Pick-Six payout. He, at least, got you off to a great start in the pick-six. Out of the eight runners he offered, he handed out the winners in each race, the second-place horses in each race and a show in Race 7.

CUMULATIVE TOTALS

ARCHIE                  248
SCOTT/GUESTS   218
PAULIE                   217

With the end of the Spring Meet at Churchill, the Handicappers will now turn their attention to "soybean Downs" or, more correctly, Ellis Park. If there is a huge card elsewhere in the nation on the upcoming Saturdays, we will consider it and possibly do that instead of Ellis.
