HANDICAPPING HEROES --Kentucky Oaks post positions and odds -- Derby thoughts on a Monday
We are 6 days away from "the fastest two minutes in sports" .The Kentucky Derby. This year's field is strong, it may be the most wide open Derby in years and, as I finalize and research the contenders...there are questions, observations and random thoughts as we await the "pill pull" on both Oaks and Derby.
Today (Monday) beginning at 11 a.m. they'll do the positioning for the Oaks. The Derby pill pull takes places Tuesday. These will be streamed live from www.kentuckyderby.com and positioning is one of the many things that can determine a horse's chances. No one wants the "rail" and there is debate on how far out in the gate a horse can be to have a shot in the race.
Since 1930, the #5 and #10 spot in the gate has produced the most Derby wins with 10 each. #17 has never produced a winner, so, you might remember these numbers. Always Dreaming, last year's winner, came out of the #5 post.
With such a wide open field, it is difficult to narrow it down to 4 or 5 legitimate contenders, I'll give my picks for Oaks on Wednesday here and Derby picks on Thursday. We'll also look at the races each day, beginning on Tuesday, with some plays and possible picks.
KENTUCKY OAKS POST POSITION DRAW AND ODDS
#1 SASSY SIENNA 15-1
#2 COACH ROCKS 12-1
#3 CLASSY ACT 15-1
#4 CHOCOLATE MARTINI 12-1
#5 WONDER GADOT 20-1
#6 KELLY'S HUMOR 30-1
#7 RAYYA 15-1
#8 HEAVENHASMYNIKKI 30-1
#9 TAKE CHARGE PAULA 15-1
#10 MIDNIGHT BISOU 5-2
#11 MY MISS LILLY 10-1
#12 PATRONA MARGARITA 30-1
#13 ESKIMO KISSES 15-1
#14 MONOMOY GIRL 2-1
No horse has ever won the Derby without racing as a three year old since Apollo in 1882...but three huge contenders find themselves looking at the first race as a three-year-old being the Derby.
An angle that sometimes gets too much emphasis is the jockey. As a buddy out at Churchill is fond of reminding me...no jockey has ever finished across the wire first by himself, it's the horse under him. Of course, trainers go with jockeys that they feel give them the best chance...so you might give the jockey/trainer/horse combo a brief look but don't base your picks solely on that angle.
We'll have more the rest of the week, so check back each day!
One teaser, a noted handicapper who had a great Keeneland meet with his prognostications, tells me that they will have to beat MENDELSSOHN this year. Such abuse towards such a classic composer is hardly warranted! Up in arms, Beethoven, Bach and Mozart !! Defend a fellow classical music heavyweight.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM CHURCHILL DOWNS -- 4/28/18
The Handicappers were there for opening night at Churchill Downs Saturday and met with some successes in their handicapping predictions. They took down the late Pk 3 and had several exactas and trifectas as well. Guest handicapper David Levitch also did fairly well with his picks also. It was an exciting night and there were some longshots crossing the wire first and even a dead heat for first in the final race. Let's see how they did:
PAULIE had 15 runners go forth (with a scratch) in the sequence and gathered two winners, three seconds, two thirds. He also had two exactas and two trifectas. Not a bad effort, but his 24 points were the lowest total of the four handicappers on the evening.
DAVID LEVITCH gave us 16 horses to consider and correctly picked three wins, had three places and a show. He cashed in on two exactas, a trifecta and had the late pick 3. Some solid handicapping for David and a total of 26 points on the night
ARCHIE saw all 16 of his enter the starting gate and produced three winners, three "second-best" and three "bronze medal" finishes. Rack him up for two exactas, two trifectas and the late Pick 3. He actually ties for first place on the evening with a strong 31 points.
SCOTT had the same results as "the Arch" by getting three winners, three seconds, three thirds, two exactas, two trifectas and the late Pick 3 Interesting that he had the "4" horse in the final race (a dead heat) and Arch had the other "heater: the "3" which caused the tie between the two. Scott gains the tie for first with 31 points also.
A great opening night at the Twin Spires with exciting racing and a huge crowd. We're not big fans of the new parking situation that started last night and will be in effect through Derby...but, despite that, a good time was had at Churchill Downs oval. .
Next week we'll have bonus coverage here at the site with some Oaks and Derby Picks for those two days and our annual "Poll the People" broadcast where we ask the patrons who they like to win the Kentucky Derby. Don't miss it!

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- CHURCHILL DOWNS RACES 7-10 -- 4/28/18
The Handicappers welcome the start of the Spring live meet at Churchill Downs this evening by dissecting the Late Pick 4 (Races 7-10) tonight at the "World's Most Legendary Track".
We're joined by guest Handicapper David Levitch today, who will offer his thoughts on the sequence. You know David. A former UofL basketball player, he's taken his "tack" from the hardwood to the backstretch and offers Handicapping advice. We'll see how he matches up against "the fellas" today.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- Results from Keeneland 4/21/18
The Handicappers took on the VERY challenging late Pick 4 (Races 7-10) Saturday at Keeneland and had a bit of success...but it was not their finest day, by far. Double digit payoffs (in terms of dollars) in three of the four races and an absolute bomb at 24-1 to start the sequence had the guys out of the Pick 4 pretty early.
Let's see how they did:
PAULIE had 15 of his 16 picks go forth....with one scratch in Dot Matrix. Out of those, he had a winner, a second and three thirds in the four race sequence. No exactas, trifectas, superfectas, Pick 3's or 4's for your genial host. He ends the day with a mere 8 points.
ARCHIE saw all 16 of his selections break from the gate. He had two winners, no seconds and three thirds. He was also shut out of the exactas, trifectas, superfectas, Pick 3's and Pick 4's. "Mr Derby" ended the day with 9 points.
SCOTT also got all 16 of his picks to contest the four races. Scott had two winners, two places, two shows. He also produced a exacta...but got knocked out in all the other multi-horse gimmicks. Still, "The Gold Room Guru" takes the day with 14 points.
We were saddened to see out buddy Faron McCubbins horse BULLARDS ALLEY stop suddenly in the ninth race and get pulled up. We later found out he was euthanized because of a Lateral condyne fracture in left rear leg. One hates to see that in racing and our condolences to Faron for losing a horse that had 40 races in his six years and had six wins...earning $927,789 dollars.

RESULTS FROM KEENELAND 4/14/18 -- HANDICAPPING HEROES
The Handicappers took on the late Pick 4 at Keeneland Saturday (Races 7-10) and absolutely
cleaned up! Paulie gave you the Pick 4 (which paid $443.50 for a .50 cent wager)!
They also provided both the early and late PK3's in the sequence. Winners, exactas, trifectas, superfectas and all for free. All you had to do is listen to the show or come to the website and
"bet with the boys" Your wallet would have thanked you.
Let's look at the individual efforts:
ARCHIE also gave us 16 horses to consider. He ended up with three winners, three places and two shows in the four race sequence. Credit Archie with two exactas, a trifecta and the late Pick 3. Archie ends with a total of 27 points
SCOTT gave us 16 runners he liked and out of those, he produced three winners, four seconds and two thirds in the four races. He also picked three exactas, two trifectas and the late Pick 3. A very respectable 34 points on the day for the "pool shark".
PAULIE had 16 selections also. He had four winners, two seconds and three thirds. Add in two exactas, a trifecta, a superfecta, both Pick 3's and the Pick 4. Throw some water on the lad...he was on fire. Paulie wins the day with 40 points.
A nice day of handicapping by all three of the "wizards" indeed. Come make money with us!

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- KEENELAND LATE PICK 4 -- RACES 7-10 -- 4/14/18
Another stakes-filled Late Pick 4 at Keeneland this week for the Handicappers to tackle. One final Derby Prep, the very competitive Jenny Wiley, the Grade III Ben Ali and a turf sprint we hope doesn't get moved off the grass, depending on weather conditions in Lexington.
Paulie, Scott and Archie have crunched the numbers and come up with what we think give you some very viable options. It's Keeneland, the quality in these runners is top notch and don't be too surprised if some huge prices hit the board.

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from Keenland 4/7/18
The Handicappers took on the Pick 4 that ran from Races 7 -10 at Keeneland
yesterday and met with a great deal of success. Between Paulie, Archie and Scott --
they hit three of the four races, two exactas, two trifectas, a superfecta and the late pick 3.
Just a reminder on how the scoring works. A winner is worth (3) points. A place is worth (2) and a show (1) point. Hitting an exacta is worth (2) points, a trifecta worth (3) points and a superfecta (4) points. Correctly picking a PICK 3 is worth (3) points and a PICK 4 gets you (4) points
WIN 3 pts
PLACE 2 pts
SHOW 1 pt
EXACTA 2 pts
TRIFECTA 3 pts
SUPER 4 pts
PICK 3 3 pts
PICK 4 4 pts
One thing we've changed from last year is selecting and awarding points for the contestants BEST JOCKEY, BEST BET and VALUE PLAY for the sequence. We felt that
too many points were being awarded for these and so you won't see those in the pages here.
So, how did the guys do?
PAULIE had 15 of his 16 horses go forth with one scratch. Out of them he had two winners, four seconds, four thirds, two exactas, two trifectas and a superfecta! HE FINISHED WITH 32 POINTS on the day.
ARCHIE had all 16 of his picks break from the gate. Out of then, he had two winners, four places, four shows, two exactas, two trifectas, and a superfecta THE ARCH ENDS THE DAY WITH 32 POINTS.
SCOTT saw 15 of his 16 runners go...with one scratch. He produced three winners, three seconds, three thirds two exactas, a trifecta, a superfecta and the late Pick 3. SCOTT ALSO EARNED 32 POINTS.
No typo here...all three tied with 32 points.
We will be exploring more options as the seasons continues. We've discussed "guest" or "celebrity" handicappers to go up against the boys...plus interviews with people in or studying to get in the industry. All that in a mere 30 minutes?
We'll have to speed up in some areas, but we can do it!
