Churchill Downs Results for 5/27/17

The Handicappers took on the late Pick 4 at Churchill Downs yesterday and produced some pretty spectacular results. They gave you the Pick 4, plus both late Pick 3's, the exacta in each race plus three trifectas. On a day were the prices weren't exactly what we hoped for, the handicapping was, at least, satisfying and accurate. Let's see how the trio did.

SCOTT HARRIS had all 16 of his runners go forth on the dirt and turf. Out of them eight hit the board. Give Scott three winners on the day, two seconds and two thirds. He also had two trifectas and two exactas...as well as the late Pick 3. Although his value play and top jockey of the sequence did not score...he did produce on his Best Bet of the Day with Finley's Lucky Charm. Scott ends with a very respectable 39 points for the day.

ARCHIE KAREL had a scratch in Race 10...so 15 of his picks broke from the gate. Seven of them showed up in the payouts column. Arch had the winner in each race, a place and two shows. He delivered the Pick 4, both Pick 3's and a exacta. He, too had the Best Bet of the Day with Finley's Lucky Charm and his top jock of the sequence (Brian Hernandez, Jr) won twice in the four races. Archie grabs second place for the day with a nice 58 points.

PAULIE caught a few breaks on the card. He, too, had the scratch in the 10th...so 15 of his went to the post. Out of them, nine returned a payout. He had all four winners, four second places and a third. Give him the exacta in all four races, a trifecta, both Pick 3's and the Pick 4. He, too, had the Best Bet of the Day with Finley's Lucky Charm and had Brian Hernandez, Jr as his best jockey of the sequence. Paulie takes the day with an impressive 72 points.

If results are what you are looking for, look no further than Handicapping Heroes. The guys gave you a profit...despite the low payouts...in each race and tossed in the Pick 3's and late Pick 4 as a little cherry on top of the sundae. We'll stack our results up against any Handicapper(s) out there...and the beauty of it is...it's all free for you. All you have to do is come and get it.

In the race to 500...Archie gets closer to the wire with a total of 448 points. Scott remains in second with 355 and Paulie narrowed the gap a bit and now has 337.

We're also here to serve you in other ways....do you have a question about horse racing? Churchill Downs? Our handicapping keys? Just let us know by posting your question in the comments section or sending it to at our new e-mail address:

Churchill Downs and Preakness Results from 5/20/17

The Handicappers took on the very challenging late Pick 4 at Churchill Downs yesterday...plus the Preakness at Pimlico and had some outstanding results with they selections they provided. Let's look at how they did.

PAULIE offered 20 horses in the five races and out of those...seven made money. He had three winners, two places and two shows. He also hit an exacta and the Pick 3 for races 8-10. Unfortunately, his best bet of the day, value play and top jock for the sequence failed to get to the winner's circle. He ends up with 20 points on the day.

SCOTT also had 20 horses on his docket. Eight of his picks returned a payoff. Three winners for Scott, four seconds and one third. He hit a very nice exacta and trifecta in Race 11 at Churchill. No jock, best bet or value play success for him. He finished with 25 points on the day.

ARCHIE sent 20 selections forth. Eight of his were in the top three. Four were winners, including Cloud Computing in the Preakness. Three places and a show for him...plus the Pick 3 for races 8-10. He hit an exacta also. His best bet and value play did not win...but he did have Brian Hernandez, Jr as his top jock and he did have a win. Archie wins the day with 36 points.

Look at what some of these payouts were on the selections.! Scott's $2 trifecta in Race 11 paid $2485.00. The exacta was $210.80. The Pick 3 Paulie and Archie gave out was a nice $381.10 payout for a $1. The Preakness exacta returned $98.40. And all you had to do is listen to the radio show or check out the website to get this information free of charge! The Handicappers continues to leave a wake of tote board destruction at whatever track they handicap!

In the race to 500 points, Archie is now up to 390. Scott follows in second at 316 and Paulie 265.

Black Eyed Susan Today...A further look at the Preakness

The Black Eyed Susan highlights the card at Pimlico today. The race...for three year old fillies...has 11 entries but non from the Kentucky Oaks two weeks ago.

Who do I like?

(1) Shimmering Aspen hasn't run in a stakes race in her young career but did win three races in a row at nearly Laurel Race Course and all three were with relative ease. she's never been moree than seven furlongs...but the 1 1/8th Black Eyed Susan seems within reach for a horse that was basically geared down for the final 1/8th of her last win. Steve Hamilton regains the ride and she's out of Rodney Jenkins barn.

(4) Full House ran into a monster in Miss Sky Warrior last time out in the Gazelle. "The Miss" won't be in the Black Eyed Susan and Full House should be forwardly placed and ready to pounce in the stretch under Rajiv Maragh. Full House was sharply checked in the first turn of the Gazelle by "The Miss" but the jockey's objection was overruled by the stewards. Veteran trainer James Jerkins trains and Maragh returns to ride.

(9) Summer Luck ran into several Oaks runners in the Ashland Stakes at Keeneland ran ran better than her fifth place finish indicates. Breaking dead last, she showed some gain on the rail late.and should be better placed today at the start. She gets Javier Castellano, who has won two out of the lasr three Black Eyed Susan's and comes out of Mark Casse's barn..which has been on fire lately. The gal barely missed getting in the Oaks...maybe today will be her lucky day.

(8) Torrent followed the leaders in Oaklawn's Fantasy but lost all hope of winning when she was forced eight wide going around the final turn. She showed some late gain despite this to finish fourth. Ron Moquett is high on her chances today and Jose Ortiz in the saddle certainly doesn't hurt at all. I fell in love with this hopeful last fall at Churchill when she won her first race...a maiden special weight affair...by six lengths. She looked like she could have gone around again and today's distance won't be a problem.

An interesting horse here is (10) Actress...a maiden running in this big stakes race. I'll use...must have a reason, right?

THE PLAY

I'll put these five in an exacta box and probably do a box wheel with them on top and everyone else on the bottom...and turning it around. A nice play possible would be a trifecta "pyramid" with them on top, adding Todd Pletcher runners (7) Moana and (5) Lights of Medina with them for second and going to the "all" button for third..

The Black Eyed Susan starts the late pick 4. I'll use 1,4,8,9,10 to begin it, go to the "all" button for race 12, single 13 (Clipthecoupon) in Race 13 and finish it with Foerza, West Coast Bias and She'slikethewind in Race 14. On the 50 cent level, it's a tidy investment of $150 but a probably payout way much higher than the initial investment.

PREAKNESS

Me with Wm. Denzik's trophy for
winning his race with Like A Haint
I'm still not moving off Always Dreaming as my top choice here. I do expect Classic Empire to give a better account of himself Saturday and he'll be my second place pick. I feel really good about Senior Investment's chances Saturday and he's my third choice. Gunnervera will close to pick up fourth.

I'll most likely repeat my Derby Day strategy and put Always Dreaming on top and everyone else beneath in exacta and trifecta selections. Maybe a side show bet on Senior investment as well.

We'll look at this race and the stakes races on Saturday's Churchill card on Handicapping Heroes radio show tomorrow. The show starts at noon and can be accessed at the link below:

Early Preakness thoughts

Saturday, May 20th is when the 2017 Preakness will be run and, as of Tuesday, it looks like there will be nine horses that will go in pursuit of knocking off prohibitive favorite ALWAYS DREAMING.

THE PROBABLE FIELD:

Always Dreaming -- Obviously the one to beat. If lucky, you'll get 4/5 at the window. Arrived OK at Pimlico and despite an Tuesday morning brief training scare...looks to be his sassy, old self and ready for the race. The question is...how to make money with him?

Classic Empire -- Will he be the "bounce back" horse? Rough Derby trip, infected eye but still managed fourth place. The word is he's training quite well for the second jewel in the Triple Crown and could seriously challenge "The Dream".  I'll use in the exotics.

Looking at Lee -- Rallied up the rail with cagey Corey Lanerie for second in Derby. No threat to the winner and one wonders if he'll get perfect trip on that rail at Pimlico?  One would think he needs to be much closer when they hit the stretch. Must include in the exotics.

Gunnervera -- Did not get a bad trip in the Derby...just didn't do anything spectacular in the race...finishing seventh. Maybe a slop issue? He did run well at Saratoga in winning the the Saratoga Special last August...but I'm just not seeing a top three finish here.

Hence -- He broke next to last in the Derby and it was obvious he didn't like the kick back from the sloppy track at Churchill. 11th place finish. Also trained by Lookin At' Lee trainer Steve Asmussen...what's the wild-haired man up to? I'll put him in the lower part of the exotics...nothing more. Sunland Derby winner...respect that a bit.

Conquest Mo Money --  Didn't make the Derby field, so he's had a bit more rest that some of these. The second place Sunland Derby finish and second place Arkansas Derby finish to Classic Empire shows he can stay close to the winners...maybe a long-shot for show money.

Cloud Computing -- His best bet here is to follow Classic Empire around the track, move when he does and try to pass him in the stretch. No pace-setter here and has run all three lifetime races at Aqueduct...so how will he handle other than his home turf? Don't think he'll have much of an impact here but Javier Castellano is riding...and he's amazing.

Multiplier -- Winner of the Illinois Derby...where he closed strongly to get the "W"...Brendan Walsh liked the way he trained Sunday at Keeneland. Joel Rosario gets on board and he's one of the best in the business. An upset Saturday is difficult to see...but not entirely impossible.

Senior Investment  -- Got his nose up just in time to win G2 Lexington...coming from out of the clouds. That stretch run might parlay into a possible tote board placement in the Preakness...or more...depending on how the early fractions go. This one will be my long shot sleeper. Respect.

Term of Art -- Can't honestly tell you why this one is in here. The Santa Anita Derby was not impressive. That being said, trainer is Doug O'Neill and he's a tricky enough son-of-gun that makes you respect. Jose Ortiz is one of the "young guns" in the jockey colony. Who knows? You make the call, I see nothing here to indicate or recommend a board finish.

I'll be back later this week with some predictions and we'll see if I can get "The Arch" and maybe even Scotty to chime in.

*******************************************************

Our partner here at Handicapping Heroes...SCOTT HARRIS...has been released from the hospital and home. He still has things to take care of and to get better but he has a plan and, for Scotty...his plans usually turn out pretty well. He hopes for a return to the Gold Room in a week or two and we're so glad that he's out of immediate danger right now.

We'll get him back up here with us as soon as he is able and anxiously await that blessed day.

Churchill Downs Results for 5/13/17

Paulie and Archie took on the late Pick 4 (races 8-11) at Churchill Downs on
Saturday and had some nice success. A full card and some very intense handicapping produced winners in three of the four races, a sweet Pick 3, two exactas and a trifecta for the predictors. Let's look at the results:

PAULIE provided 16 horses he thought would gather money. Out of those, seven were in the money. He had three winners, a second and three thirds. Give him an exacta, trifecta and Pick 3 in the sequence. The final race stumped him, unfortunately...and his best bet of the day, value play and top jock for the sequence did not score. He finishes with 22 points.

ARCHIE came up with 16 runners as well for the four race sequence. Out of those...six hit the board. He had a winner, three seconds and two shows. Add an exacta to Archie's total as well. He also whiffed on the final race. His best bet and value play didn't produce...but he did pick Corey Lanerie as his jock for the sequence and Lanerie got the win in the 10th race. Archie narrowly takes the day with 23 points.

A PICK 3 that paid $1372.10 on a $1 bet. A $2 EXACTA that brought back $142.20. A $2 TRIFECTA returning $566.40.  Handicapping Heroes is giving away money for nothing! Are you collecting?

Churchill Spring Meet -- Five things to look for

With Derby Week behind us, we roll headlong into the rest of the Spring Meet at Churchill Downs. The rest of May, June and early July will feature a lot of fun events and great racing. Let's look at five things that will be available to you and also a strategy or two.

1) THE GREAT EIGHT

A strong jockey colony will be on hand for the Spring Meet...riding for some excellent trainers. Keep your eye on Corey Lanerie, Julian Leparoux, Brian Hernandez, Jr., Ricardo Santana, James Graham, Shaun Bridgmohan, Florent Geroux and Calvin Borel on the track. These riders have had a multitude of success at Churchill over the years and will be in contention for the meet's leading rider title.

2) TWILIGHT THURSDAYS

Be sure to hit Thursday's at Churchill, starting tonight. A later post time of 5 p.m. gives you plenty of time to hit the Twin Spires after work and $1 beers from 5-8 p.m....plus food trucks should be enough motivation to get you out and party with your friends.

3) FAIRGROUNDS FORTITUDE

A trend I picked up on last week is that horses that shipped in from Fairgrounds Race Track in New Orleans ran very well at Churchill during Derby week. Quite a few of these delivered a nice price at the teller's window as well...so be sure to watch these runners and include them in your wagering strategies!

4) DOWNS AFTER DARK

These special evenings at Churchill feature great racing, entertainment and huge crowds. Four of these evenings are planned for the Spring Meet...so check the calendar and meet up with your crew to party and parley by the paddock!

5) A NEW AND IMPROVED LOOK

You'll definitely want to check out the newly remodeled second floor of the clubhouse when you hit the track. Plenty of food and beverage options, an expanded betting area with plenty to tellers and wagering machines and big screens galore to watch the races at Churchill...as well as the best simulcasting options around!

A little bit of everything for all. Whether it's the social, betting or excitement that brings you out to Churchill...it looks like they intensified the efforts to make sure you are entertained during your time at the track.

You just might run into the Handicapping Heroes crew as well during your visit...and if you do, walk right up to us...ask us who we like and join us for a beverage or a bit of banter.

Be sure to catch the weekly broadcast of Handicapping Heroes on WCHQ 100.9 FM and on-line at www.crescenthillradio.com Saturdays at noon.

Derby Day Recap

After a soggy morning, the sun shone brightly on our old Kentucky home and Churchill Downs. ALWAYS DREAMING got a perfect trip, overcame State of Honor in the stretch and went onto win the 143rd Kentucky Derby by a couple of lengths over long shot Lookin At Lee.

Scott and Paulie handicapped the middle PK 4 (races 9-12). Paulie also provided selections on races 6-8. Here's how they did.

SCOTT gave us 14 horses in the sequence. He did have a scratch. Out of his 13 runners, he had three hit the board. Give him a place and two shows. His point total was 4. (Note, these won't apply to the overall standings since Archie was not a participant.)

PAULIE sent 16 selections. All ran. Out of them, eight hit the board. He had three winners, two seconds and three shows. He provided the Kentucky Derby winner with Always Dreaming. He gave out the exacta, trifecta and superfecta in Race 11. He finishes with 19 points.

In Races 6-8, Paulie had two winners, a second and two thirds.

The Handicapping Heroes Radio Show on Saturday was a classic! We gave out 18 Derby Selections from various people. A few even got the winner! The rebroadcast can be heard at the link below.

Churchill Downs "Thurby" Picks

Today is "Thurby" at Churchill Downs...a day that is Louisville's Day at the track and has grown into an event that almost rivals Oaks Day in track attendance. As of this early morning writing, the expected rain has not began to arrive yet...but
the TV weather gal assures me it is on the way.

I hope she's wrong.

I invited guest Handicapper "The Wizard"...one of the I'll Have Another gang... to handicap today's late Pick 4 along with me. The last four races at Churchill proved to be quite interesting and challenging and we have some different ideas in these. Toss in a little sloppy track conditions and it could be quite a day.

(We didn't have race scratches as of this posting...so let's hope our horses get in!)

Churchill Downs' Kentucky Oaks and Derby Positions

FOR THE OAKS

1. Ever So Clever, Luis Contreras/ Steve Asmussen 20-1
2. Lockdown, Jose Ortiz/ Bill Mott 20-1
3. Mopotism, Mario Gutierrez/ Doug O’Neill 20-1
4. Paradise Woods, Flavien Prat/ Richard Mandella 5-2
5. Jordan’s Henny, Joe Rocco Jr/ Michael Tomlinson 30-1
6. Vexatious, Kent Desormeaux/ Neil Drysdale 20-1
7. Farrell, Channing Hill/ Wayne Catalano 5-1
8. Sailor’s Valentine, Corey Lanerie/ Eddie Kenneally 30-1
9. Wicked Lick, Brian Hernandez Jr./ Brendan Walsh 30-1
10. Miss Sky Warrior, Paco Lopez/ Kelly Breen 9-2
11. Tequilita, Luis Saez/ Michael Matz 20-1
12. Daddys Lil Darling, Julien Leparoux/ Kenny McPeek 20-1
13. Abel Tasman, Mike Smith/ Bob Baffert 5-1
14. Salty, Joel Rosario/ Mark Casse 6-1
AE: Summer Luck 30-1

Initial thoughts.  They didn't do Always So Clever any favors on the rail. Salty should be OK outside. Miss Sky Warrior and Paradise Woods got great positions. So did Vexatious and Farrell.

FOR THE DERBY

1. Lookin At Lee 20-1 (Lanerie)
2. Thunder Snow 20-1 (Soumillon)
3. Fast and Accurate 50-1 (Hill)
4. Untrapped 30-1 (Santana Jr.)
5. Always Dreaming 5-1 (Velazquez)
6. State of Honor 30-1 (Lezcano)
7. Girvin 15-1 (Smith)
8. Hence 15-1 (Geroux)
9. Irap 20-1 (Gutierrez)
10. Gunnevera 15-1 (Castellano)
11. Battle of Midway 30-1 (Prat)

14. Classic Empire 4-1 (Leparoux)
15. McCraken 5-1 (Hernandez Jr.)
16. Tapwrit 20-1 (Ortiz)
17. Irish War Cry 6-1 (Maragh)
18. Gormley 15-1 (Espinoza)
19. Practical Joke 20-1 (Rosario)
20. Patch 30-1 (Gaffalione)
AE: Royal Mo 20/1 (Stevens)
AE: Master Plan 50/1 (Velazquez)

Initial thoughts...I like that #14 Classic Empire ,#15 McCraken and #17 Irish War Cry are outwardly placed. #7 Girvin and #5 Always Dreaming avoided the rail...a good thing. These five will be figured in my thoughts on exotic and such. I'll find a sixth horse to work with also. It might be #16 Tapwrit. Remember, five out of the last six Derby winners have come from the post positions #13 or higher.

2011 #16 Animal Kingdom
2012 # 19 I'll Have Another
2013 # 15 Orb
2014 # 5 California Chrome
2015 # 18 American Pharoah
2016 # 13 Nyquist

We will have our "Thurby" breakdown in Thursday's column.
