HANDICAPPING HEROES -- Breeders Cup week -- Wednesday -- Horses to watch. in Classic, Mile and Juvenile Turf Sprint
Yes, Breeders Cup comes to Churchill Downs this week and we're expanding our coverage here at HANDICAPPING HEROES starting today. There will be articles here today through Sunday and here's what we have in store for you:
TODAY -- Horses in three races Paulie thinks you should consider.
THURSDAY -- Thoughts on trainers and who they're bringing to Churchill
FRIDAY -- Our picks and audio for the five Friday Breeders Cup races
SATURDAY -- Who we like in the Breeders Cup Day Late Pick 4
SUNDAY -- Recap and review.
So, with 14 races over two days, there is a lot of ground to cover. The best of the best. All ages, different distances, different surfaces. I thought I'd look at horses, from three different races, who just might warrant your attention.
IN THE CLASSIC
Catholic Boy. The 3-year-old multi-surface talent flourished this summer, reeling off three straight graded stakes wins in a span of less than three months, including the Grade 1 Belmont Derby on turf and the Grade 1 Travers at the Classic distance. Not much chatter surrounding the bay ridgling as he’s facing older males for the first time, but is he that much far off? He looked strong in his 5-furlong work (1:01.02) Sunday at Churchill Downs. An overlooked upset candidate? We'll take 8-1.
IN THE JUVENILE TURF SPRINT
Aidan O'Brian is loaded for bear in the opening race of the Breeder Cup five races, the "Future Stars Friday". He will send a pair of talented European-based turf runners. Among them is group 3 winner Sergei Prokofiev, a son of the late Scat Daddy. As a counterpart to the colt, O'Brien has also entered So Perfect, a Scat Daddy filly and fellow group 3 winner who finished second against males—a half-length behind the winner—in the Aug. 12 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (G1) at Newmarket. Don't be surprised if both "hit the board" and give him a exacta finish. With 6-1 on Sergei and 12-1 morning line odds on So Perfect, a great chance to hit "sumthin' big".
THE SATURDAY SPRINT
If you're going to the Saturday Breeders Cup races, don't forget the limo. Not the chauffeured-driven kind, (although that'd be nice). We're talking about morning line 6-1 runner LIMOUSINE LIBERAL , who will break from the gate for owner Katherine Ball, trainer Ben Colebrook and have Jose Ortiz on his back.
While, for whatever reason, Keeneland has proven to be an unlucky host to Limousine Liberal, the other big track in the Commonwealth has proven to be his own friendly confines. In eight lifetime races under the iconic Twin Spires, he has six wins, while just missing in another. Making that stat line all the more impressive is the fact that he comes to this year's edition of the Sprint having won five straight at Churchill Downs, and all of them were stakes races. You wanna give us 6-1 on this "horse for the course?" Yep, we'll accept.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- KEENELAND -- RESULTS FROM LATE PICK 4 -- 10/27/18
The Handicappers fired away at the late Pick 4 at Keeneland on the final day of the Fall meet and had some nice successes. As the horses, trainers, owners and jockeys now transition over to Churchill for Breeders Cup and the Fall meet there, we say "Goodbye" to the Lexington track and set out sights on the running under the Twin Spires.
Here's how we did yesterday:
HOLLYWOOD had 15 of his picks go in the four-race sequence. Out of those, he gave you two winners, two seconds and two thirds. That's a 40% "in the money" percentage. Credit him an exacta as well. HOLLYWOOD ends up with 20 points in the sequence.
ARCHIE also had 15 runners break from the gate. He scored three winners, three seconds and a third. That's a 46% "in the money" percentage. Arch also had three exactas, and hit the late Pick 3. ARCHIE takes second place on the day with 25 points.
PAULIE suffered a few scratches and 13 of his picks ended up contesting the distances. He registered three winners, three seconds and a third. A 54% "in the money percentage. He also picked three exactas, a trfecta, a superfecta and the late Pick 3. PAULIE takes the contest with a strong 32 points.
Sometimes, it's "that one race" that can do long term damage on those multiple race-type of wagers. Yesterday, it was the 7th. race. None of the handicappers cold come up with the winner (Faraway Kitten) and he maybe should have been given a closer look with Brian Hernandez, Jr. on board and it being a turf race. Michael Maker trained and owned by the Ramsey's...the horse went off a 11-1 and rewarded his backers handsomely. As a group, we came up with just two horses between the three of us, in that race, that made money -- Archie's selection of English Bee who ran third and Hollywood's choice of Go Away, who got up for second.
We'll move to Churchill next week and try to give you, here at the site, as much coverage as possible on the Breeders Cup Friday and Saturday races. Check here for our picks on Friday and Saturday.

The Handicappers try the late Pick 4 at Keeneland on the final weekend of Fall racing at the Lexington track. Although our luck and skills haven't been top notch, it is a very tough track to handicap with so many good horses, trainers, jockeys and owners. HANDICAPPING HEROES -- KEENELAND -- RESULTS FROM LATE PICK 4 -- 10/20/18
The Handicappers gave the late Pick 4 at Keeneland their best shot and, although they did not take it down...had some successes. Once again, one race proved to be the downfall for their play...an invader from Canada and Presque Isle Downs coming off two wins swept past all the favorites in the Raven Run ninth race...paying almost $40 on a $2 dollar win wager and was part of a huge "boxcars" superfecta that paid over $12,000 on a 10 cent super!
Hindsight, of course, is always 20/20 and after reviewing the race, one could certainly make the case for the horse winning...but none of us did on air or back him at the windows.
Here's how the guys did:
ARCHIE gave us 15 runners he liked and out of those he provided three winners, a place and a show. He also had an exacta. That's a 33% "in the money" number. No Pick 3's for him or any of the handicappers yesterday. ARCHIE TIES FOR SECOND PLACE WITH 14 POINTS.
HOLLYWOOD also had 15 break from the gate and ended up producing two winners, three seconds and no shows. He gave out the final race exacta which paid almost $50 on the dollar as well. His "in the money" percentage was 33% as well and HOLLYWOOD TIES ARCHIE WITH 14 POINTS.
PAULIE sent 14 runners around the turn and gave out two winners, three seconds and two shows. He also produced an exacta and trifecta. His "in the money" percentage was 50%. A nice day, with a few misgivings for THE PAULSTER AND WINS THE COMPETITION WITH 19 POINTS.
An interesting day at the Lexington track that saw Brian Hernandez, Jr triple his previous win total with three victories on the card and New York invader Jose Ortiz getting a goose eggs on wins.

Our new logo
We have created a new logo for Handicapping Heroes.
With the addition of Hollywood to the show and the tragic death of our co-founder Scott Harris, we felt it was time to do this. We'll always remember Scott and his words and thoughts will live on here in our archives.
On Saturday, the handicappers will take on the Pick 4 at Keeneland.
A special thanks to KATHY WEISBACH at WCHQ FM for the thought, design and idea !

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- KEENELAND -- RESULTS FROM LATE PICK 4 -- 10/13/18
The Handicappers took on the challenging late Pick 4 at Keeneland yesterday and had a faily good day. With so many good horses, trainers and jockeys on the premises, it's quite a feat to be right every time with one's selections and sometimes the hunches, training angles, past performances and jockey switches are for naught. Some horse just pops up there that you didn't consider too strongly and wins. Usually at a pretty decent price.
That's why they call it gambling.
Here's how the handicappers did:
HOLLYWOOD saw all 16 of his picks test the dirt and turf. Out of those, he had two winners and a third. That's a 19% "in the money" figure. No exactas, trifectas, Pick 3 or 4 success for him yesterday. HOLLYWOOD finishes the four-race sequence with 7 points.
ARCHIE also had all of his 16 selections try the distances. He ended up with three winners, a second and two thirds. A 38% "in the money number. He also got shut out on the exactas, trifectas and the Pick 3 and 4 sequences. ARCHIE ends up with 13 points.
PAULIE had 16 go forth for him also. He totaled two wins, three seconds and two thirds. He did manage hitting an exacta in the ninth race, but had no trifectas nor the Pick 3 or Pick 4 contests. PAULIE squeaks by as the top point-getter with 16 points.
None of us could figure out the filly and mare affair in the 8th race yesterday and did not pick the winner between the three of us. A horse that hadn't won in over a year and had been beaten by a combinated 45 lenghts in her last two (QUICK, QUICK, QUICK) proved to be quick enough and took the six furlong race. I wouldn't have had it unless I would have hit the "all" button for the race.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- SELECTIONS FOR LATE PK 4 -- 10/13/18
The Handicappers head again to Lexington to try their skills against the Keeneland runners in Races 7-10...the late Pick4. A good variety of events to look at, a maiden 67K, two nice allowance races and the Grade I Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup stakes. The first two on the dirt, the final two on the turf.
We know not, this early, what track conditions will be like by the time of the seventh race...a guess would say a "good" dirt condition and maybe "yielding" turf...but it's anyone's guess. With Kentucky Football on a "bye" week,I expect the bourbon drinkers and college kids to stay around for the entire card...which could skewer the odds.
We don't pay a lot of attention to odds, anyway. We just pick winners...so here goes:

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM KEENELAND LATE PICK 4 -- 10/6/18
The Handicappers tried their best to decipher a very challenging late Pick 4 at Keeneland Saturday and had a bit of success...but, as can happen early in a meet with so many talented trainers, jockeys and horses on the premises...things can sometimes not go as envisioned. They were unable to bring down the Pick 4. A huge payout there of over $15.000.00 and horses that scored at 70-1 and 23-1.
Bombs exploded in the ninth and tenth races that we weren't able to come up with and those who were lucky enough to successfully predict them got rewarded handsomely. It's horseracing. It can and does happen.
Here's how they fared:
PAULIE had 14 of his picks go forth (two scratches) and out of those he had two winners, a second and two thirds. That's a 36% "in the money" percentage. Add an exacta to his totals but no Pick 3's or Pick 4. PAULIE ends the day with 12 points.
HOLLYWOOD saw 15 of his selections get a call. He had two firsts, two seconds and a third. A 33% "in the money" percentage. Give him two exactas as well. HOLLYWOOD takes second in the day's point totals with 15 points.
ARCHIE had no scratches and all 16 of his picks contested the distances. Two winners for him, with a place and three shows. He ends up with a 38% "in the money" percentage. He adds an exacta and trifectas to his successes. ARCHIE narrowly takes the day's competition with 16 points.
Keeneland is tough, no doubt about it. Too early yet to determine any tracks biases, hot jockeys or sizzling trainers. We'll keep firing, though.
