Who can figure out this year's 3 yr. old crop?...Monmouth Results
Remember back in March and April of this year? Remember who we were talking about as the Derby favorites? Seems a while back right? We were big on McCracken here. After floundering in the Derby, he has returned pretty well...winning the Matt Winn at Churchill and finishing a nose back in second yesterday in the Haskell to Girvin...another one we were high on back in April and paid you generously at 9-1 if you were wise enough to include him. His trainer Joe Sharp said he was ready to win a Grade I race and he did just that with cagey Robby Albarado tracking down another favorite jockey of mine in Brian Hernandez, Jr on McCracken in the final jumps to get the upset win and complete a sweet exacta for us ($77.90 on a $1 box) and the Pick 3 ($193.50)...which we handed to you yesterday free of charge.
I came close to making the wager a Pick 4. I loved both Chad Brown horses in the first leg (Race 9) but didn't go there. That mistake cost me a $671 payout on the sequence (on a 50 cent wager).
We live and learn. Wind Tartare and Joel Rosario did the job for C.B.
We take our Pick 3 win, though, and are satisfied with it...specially since it only cost $32 to invest.
Money's On Charlotte was a nice way to start the Pick 3 and I gave you the exacta and trifecta in Race 10 as well. Next, Wekeela downed odds-on favorite Miss Temple City in the Matchmaker and I predicted that one also...along with another exacta and trifecta for you. Girvin finished the job. Pity the poor fool on "The Horse Racing Network" who boldly proclaimed he was going six deep in the final race of the Pick 4 and tossing out Girvin. Hey, buddy...ever heard of the "all" button if you're going that deep?
Sadly, a similar story from Saturday where a couple of associates nearly took down the Saturday late Pick 4 at Saratoga ($4667 on a $2 wager). They had 3 of the 4 winners and took six horses in the race they lost (The Bowling Green) but left out Hunter O'Riley...the 16-1 winner. An "all" button there would have cost just a few dollars more per person. I'm sure they're tired of hearing about that...I can't fault them...I didn't like or use Hunter O'Riley either. Another reason why they call Saratoga "the graveyard of favorites" right there for ya....
This year's Derby winner Always Dreaming ran third Saturday. The Preakness winner Cloud Computing finished behind him in Saratoga's Jim Dandy...where a first-time dirt participant (Good Samaritan) and first-time two turns runner (Giuseppe The Great) stole the show. How many of you remember that "Good Sam" actually ran on Derby Day at Churchill? Not in the big race, of course...but in the American Turf Stakes...where he came flying down the center of the Matt Winn Turf Course and edged out Big Score to finish second to Arklow? I had him that day and remembered the run...I didn't know how well he'd adjust to dirt...but it seems he likes it just fine.
So...who is the top of the three year old crop currently? Will we ever see Classic Empire again? Any love left for Irap? How do Irish War Cry and Timeline rebound from yesterday's defeat?
The Travers at Saratoga may provide a few more answers before the Breeders Cup...the Travers is about a month away. Who will head to the Spa to contest it?
Plenty of questions remain about this 3 year old crop.

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from 7/29/17 and a look at the Haskell
The Handicappers took on the late Pick 4 at Saratoga yesterday and didn't do too badly at all...coming up with three of the four winners of the sequence at the "graveyard of favorites" . None of us could come up with the winner of the ninth race...the Bowling Green Stakes...a 16-1 shot in Hunter O' Riley but it wasn't a bad day overall. Let's see how the fellas did.
ARCHIE gave us 16 horses he hoped would run well. With the scratch of AP INDIAN in the 8th race, the handicappers had the option of substituting a horse, since all three had this one in their selections. Paul and Archie chose to add a horse, Scott did not. Out of Archie's runners, nine hit the board. He had two winners, three seconds and four thirds. Also an exacta and trifecta. Although his best bet and value play failed to win...he did have his top jock Javier Castellano win a race for him. ARCHIE finishes the day with a very respectable 31 points.
SCOTT had 15 runners break from the gate. Nine of those got paid for him. Three winners, two places and four shows for the pool shark. Add in an exacta and trifecta as well for him. Neither his best bet nor value play won...but he also had Castellano as his top jock of the sequence. SCOTT finishes second on the day with 32 points.
PAULIE also gave you 16 mounts to consider. Nine of his were cashable tickets. Three winners, three places and three shows for the Paulster. He also had an exacta and trifecta scores. His best bet and value play were beaten...but he, too, had Castellano as his top jock. PAULIE barely wins the day with 33 points.
Sometimes, just one big hit can make the day and that was the case in Race 10 for Paulie...where he hit a $145 exacta and $355 trifecta (based on $2 wager) when Good Samaritan and Giuseppe The Great ran by the Derby winner (Always Dreaming) and Preakness champ (Cloud Computing) to create a nice payday. Although the top two weren't his top two picks...he used them to fill out the exacta and trifecta and got a nice payout surprise. Never be afraid to take a chance when formulating those types of tickets. Favorites don't win every race...especially at Saratoga.
Another example is the "Grand Slam". Paulie caught that twice yesterday...it paid $90.50 for a $1 wager. Paulie plays it with two runners in the first three races and the"all" button in the final. $181 total winnings on a $45 ticket. Why Churchill and the Kentucky tracks do not add this wager to their offerings is beyond me. Currently, the New York tracks are the only ones that offer it. The objective is to pick horses to come in at least third in the first three races of the sequence and the winner of the fourth leg.
The Pick 4...by the way...paid $4667. The "all" button in the 9th Race would have been smart here, right?
IN THE CUMULATIVE points race:
PAULIE -- 282
ARCHIE -- 260
SCOTT -- 219
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
I don't like playing Monmouth Race Curse ( I call it curse because that's usually what I end up doing when I bet there...) as a rule but they're offering the $1 million Haskell Invitational Stakes this Sunday...so I'll take a chance. I'm not going for the Pick 4 there...but will try a pick three. Here's the build....starting in Race 10. It's a 50 cent wager, so I'll go deep...
I've invited the boys to join me...we'll see if they respond.
RACE 10 -- MOLLY PITCHER
5 - Mo'Green
3 - Eskenformoney
2 - Carrumba
6 - Money's on Charlotte
RACE 11 -- MATCHMAKER
2 - Miss Temple City
3 - War Flag
4 - Quiet Kitten
1 - Wekeela
RACE 12 -- HASKELL
1 - Irish War Cry
7 - Girvin
5 - McCracken
3 - Timeline
If you want to short that $32 ticket I've proposed...Miss Temple City in the 11th looks pretty much like she'll romp against these today...so you could "shorten and single" there...I don't love her that much...
Good luck all.

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from 7/22/17
The Handicappers went after the elusive late Pick 4 at Saratoga on Saturday but fell just short in their quest. Living true to the tag "Graveyard of Favorites" we saw a couple of morning line 12-1 horses ruin the party in races nine and 11...but still had a pretty good day. Anytime you can bat .500 with winners up there...you are doing some good handicapping.
SCOTT selected 16 horses he thought could finish in the money and nine of them ended up doing just that. Two wins, three seconds and four shows for "Gold Room Scotty"...plus and exacta and trifecta. Unfortunately, he did not connect on his best bet of the day, value play or top jockey in the sequence. He finished the day with 21 points.
PAULIE also had 16 participate and six of his got paid. Two winners, two second place and two third place finished. No exactas or trifectas...but his best best of the day (Lady Eli) did win. Sadly, his value play and top jock of the sequence did not win. He'll take 22 points for the day.
ARCHIE is down the the back but very alive and well with his handicapping yesterday at the Spa. Out of his 16, seven hit the board. Two wins, two places and three shows. Give the man an exacta and trifecta as well. The bonus plays is where he cleaned up. His best bet of the day was also Lady Eli, like Paulie. Although his value play lost, his top jock of the sequence (Irad Ortiz, Jr) won three of the four races in the sequence. Archie takes the day with an impressive 58 points.
Sometimes it's about the jockeys in handicapping. Although Javier Castellano got shut out...another strong rider in Irad Ortiz, Jr got you paid $3.90, $16 and $27.60 on $2 wagers. That's $47.50 on a $6 investment and you can do the math if you want on across the board wagering on Irad...it's nice I'll tell you that...so, sometimes...even if they only win once....betting on jockeys can be profitable.

Spa and Del Mar open! Good racing returns
Not that the racing at Ellis and Indiana Downs hasn't been challenging to handicap...and the cards have been better than expected...but great summer racing is back upon us with the opening of Del Mar earlier this week and the summer meet at Saratoga opening today.
Some notable Churchill jockeys will test their skills at Saratoga. A look at the Friday card reveals Julian Leparoux, Florent Geroux, Ricardo Santata and Joe Bravo all have rides today. They'll get plenty of challenges from the NYRA regular riders... the Ortiz boys, Johnny V., Javier, Joel, Manual Franco, Luis Saez and more.
The top trainers, the top horses, a promising group of two year olds and full fields. Welcome back Saratoga.
On the west coast, Del Mar is the epitome of California racing. You've got a great contingent of jocks to consider out there...Bearano, Nakatani, Desormeaux, Tyler Baze, Drayton Van Dyke, Tiago Pereira, Flavian Prat and Aaron Gryder...to name just a few.
We'll mostly stick with Spa handicapping here until September...when Churchill rolls back around...and that handicapping is quite challenging. Read our picks here on Saturdays.
Don't miss our excellent radio show HANDICAPPING HEROES...which airs Saturdays at noon on WCHQ 100.9 FM and streams live at www.crescenthillradio.com You can also hear previous shows at the site, too.
High quality summer racing. Welcome back!

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from 7-15-17
The Handicappers took on the very challenging late Pick 4 at Ellis Park on Saturday. Although they weren't able to win the sequence with their picks...they did have some very good results in the first three races of the sequence. None of us had the foresight to pick the 17-1 winner in Race 9...it was still a good selection day. Watching a front runner that you have in your picks getting nipped at the wire is tough...but it's happened to all of us.
SCOTT gave us 16 horses to consider and out of those 15 broke from the gate. All three of the handicappers had 1A Babe Raham Jan in their picks in the ninth race...but the horse was scratched shortly before the start. Seven of his made money...he had three wins, three seconds and a third. Give Scott two exactas and the early Pick 3 on the sequence. Although his value play and top jock failed to win, he did score with BIG IRON in the seventh race as his best best. GIVE SCOTT 33 points on the day.
PAULIE had 15 of his 16 start. Seven of his were cashable tickets at the window. Three winners, two seconds and two thirds over the sequence. One exacta and the early Pick 3 for Paulie also. His best bet UNITED STAND won the sixth race and his top jockey in the sequence Channing Hill had a win also. His value play did not fare too well, though. PAULIE finished the day with 40 points.
ARCHIE also had 15 of his 16 selections gobble up dirt. Seven of his got you paid. Three wins, two seconds and two thirds for him. He also had the early Pick 3, an exacta and a trifecta in race 6. Archie scored on his best bet of the day BONNIE ARCH and his value play BIG IRON. Although his jockey for the day Manny Cruz failed to win in the sequence...ARCHIE TAKES THE DAY WITH 44 points.
As Scott will tell you...we can't pick our prices, just the winners. And we provided plenty of those. It was a day where favorites were doing well late and that'll happen sometimes...but a win is a win...regardless of the odds. It just means a lot of people agreed with you.
WE love to see our higher priced horse selections win each race obviously, but studies show that favorites do win about 1/3 of the time. That does leave you with 2 out of 3 chances to catch a price and that's hat we try to give you here at Handicapping Heroes.
You can hear a rebroadcast of Saturday's show at the link below: It went long and if anyone can come up with an idea to keep these guys to 10 minutes or less in their segments....e-mail me at handicappngheroes@gmail.com

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from 7/8/17
The Handicappers took on the late pick 4 from Stars and Stripes Day at Belmont RaceCourse yesterday and found a lot of success. The guys provided the Pick 4, both Pick 3's in the sequence...plus all four exactas, two trifectas and a superfecta. Here's the breakdown:
SCOTT gave us 16 horses to consider in the four races and all went forth. He had nine of those finish in the money. Three winners, four seconds and two thirds. He also provided three exactas and a trifecta. Although his best bet (Shaman Ghost) fell short and value play (Bold Recall) did not get to the wire in time...his top jockey (Javier Castellano) did win a race. SCOTT ENDS WITH AN EFFICIENT 38 POINTS ON THE DAY.
ARCHIE also had 16 try the surface and also had nine provide a payout. He picked all four winners, had three places and two shows. The Pick 4, both pick 3's, two trifectas, three exactas all under his selection guidance. Unfortunately, his best bet (Shaman Ghost) ran second, his value play (Arklow) is still running and top jock (Johnny Velazquez) did not pick up a win. ARCHIE HAS A NICE DAY TO FINISH SECOND AND PICKS UP 42 POINTS.
PAULIE participated with 16 runners. Out of them, nine made the tote board. He also had all four winners, three seconds and two shows. Count him in all the Pick 4, both pick 3's, a superfecta in Rqce 8 (8-12-7-11), two trifectas and three exactas. Shaman Ghost failed as my best bet (although credit to Keen Ice for a nice stretch run). Whitecliffsofdover didn't develop as my value play but Javier Castellano did get me one win. PAULIE WINS FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT WEEK WITH 56 POINTS.
We make you money and don't charge you for the information. Crazy, right?
I had a nice last Saturday betting the "pea patch" at Ellis and decided to experiment with my winnings. Yesterday, based on my picks, I:
- bet $1 on each exacta (12x4) = $48
- bet $1 on each trifecta (24x4) = $96
- bet $1 on each Pick 3 (4x4x4) $64 (twice for $128)
- bet a 50 cent Pick 4 (4x4x4x4 divided in half for $144
- bet $10 to win on my best best
- bet $10 to win on my value play
-bet $10 to win on Castelllano in each of the four races. = $40.
A total of $476...which may be a bit out of the reach of some who visit the site. Let's look at the returns, though....which totalled $650.

Handicapping Heroes -- Happy Fourth of July
From the Handicappers....have a safe and fun Fourth!
Freedom isn't free...there are many in our history who sacrificed to give us
our independence and right to do things we take for granted. Never forget
and always appreciate the the fact you have the right to choose and express.
We are all races and creeds. We are all ages and religious types. We are farmers,
forensic scientists, bakers and botanists. We fix cars and repair hearts. We race
horses and watch children. We have the right to dissent, demonstrate and speak
out for what is wrong and right in this world. Rejoice in those freedoms.
Thank those who got us here, keep us here and also remember that you can make
a difference, you can debate and you can choose. There are many who cannot...

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from Ellis Park 7/1/17
The Handicappers took their skills to Ellis Park for the opening day of their summer meet yesterday and owned the place in the late PK 4 sequence. Both Pick Threes, the late Pick 4, all four exactas and three trifectas were successfully provided for the reader on these pages yesterday. Let's look at the individual numbers...
ARCHIE had 14 of his 16 picks break from the gate after a couple of scratches and seven returned a payout. He had three winners, three seconds and a third in his numbers. Give Archie a couple of exactas as well. Unfortunately, his best bet, value play and top jock of the sequence did not finish first. ARCHIE ends the day with 20 points.
SCOTT saw all 16 of his selections race. He ended up cashing tickets on eight of them. Three firsts, four places and a show for "Gold Room Scotty". Three exactas and a trifecta also paid out on his picks. His best bet and value play did not get to the winners circle but his top jock...Corey Lanerie...did. SCOTT finishes the day with 37 points.
PAULIE found the "pea patch" to his liking. 15 of his 16 choices got a call. Nine of those were good for taking to the window. Paulie swept the sequence with four winners, two seconds and three thirds. Add in two exactas and two trifectas for him. He also had both of the Pick 3's in the sequence and the Pick 4. Although his value play ran a bit short, his best bet of the day Caberneigh barely got to the wire in time in the final and his top jock of the sequence Brian Hernandez, Jr. got his picture taken twice. Those bonus categories really paid off for him...Paulie wins the day with 69 points.
You want to play the ponies and have a good time....whether it's live or online. Socialize, watch exciting races and have a fun day. Why not end the day with more money than you started with? All you have to do is follow the handicapping we provide here to pad the wallet. All for free, from the guys who know the horses, jockeys, trainers and "in's and out's". HOW DOES A $1143.40 PICK 4 SOUND TO YOU? PICK THREES THAT PAY $177.20 and $374.00. $517, $131 AND $147 TRIFECTAS? They're here waiting for you. All you have to do is click and read...or listen to the radio show. Pretty simple, right?
