RESULTS FROM 9/24/16 -- HANDICAPPING HEROES

The Handicappers did quite well dissecting and predicting the late Pk. 3 and Pk. 4 at Churchill Downs last night...picking winners in all four races. Both Archie and Scott successfully lined out exactas in all but race 9.

SCOTT HARRIS gave us 16 horses to consider for wagering. Out of those, eight hit the board for a very respectable 50% on the board rate and he also lined out three exactas as well! Give him 25 points on the day. He had four winners, three placed and a show.

ARCHIE KAREL also discussed 16 horses on the Handicapping Heroes radio show Saturday at noon. Seven of his picks returned money....for a respectable 44% on the board rate. Arch was in on two exactas also. He finishes with 21 points on the day. He had four winners, two places and a show.

If you had put two dollars to win on Archie's top two picks in each race, you would have spent $16 and received $20.40 back....same for Scott.

In the overall points battle, Scott increased his lead 392 to 345.

If you missed the show live, here's a link you can go back and listen to it:

**************************************************************

Starting next week...the stakes go up in the points battle. We're wiping the slate clean and will go into a nine-week race for the crown. The point-scoring will remain the same...but we'll also give each Handicappers the following potential points boosts.

1) Each handicapper will have the chance to pick his best bet of the day and award an additional 10 points to their total if the horse wins.

2) We'll also give each handicapper the chance to pick his "top jock" in the four race sequence. If that jock wins in any of the four races, we'll add 10 points to the handicappers total. If he wins three times, for example, we'd add 30 points.

3) The "value play" of the day. The handicappers will have the option of providing a horse that they think might win at odds of 8-1 or higher. If it hits, they'll get a 20 point bonus on their totals.

This should spice it up a bit...

Selections for 9/24/16 -- HANDICAPPING HEROES

The Handicappers are taking on the late pick 4 at Churchill Downs beginning with race eight on a Downs After Dark Saturday. They know the odds may get a bit askew with the millennials and Generation X crowd descending upon the track...but the boys have never let prices (or lack of them) discourage them...they just pick winners. As Scott has said before...we can only control our selections, not the odds.

SCOTT HARRIS

Race 8 -- Maiden Special Weight $43,000 -- 1 1/16 miles

(2) December Seven is a closer that adds Lasix for the first time and gets cagey JAmes Graham in the saddle. (6) Burntwood will have popular rider Brian Hernandez Jr in the saddle and has improved each of his last three (4) Up the Flue could surprise at a nice price. (3) Our Track just missed at Ellis last time out and should appreciate the stretch out.

SELECTIONS -- 2-6-4-3

Race 9 -- Dogwood Stakes $100,000 -- 7 furlongs

(6) Saharan comes to town for James Jerkins...Jerkins doesn't ship them much out of New York, so he must think he has a great chance to win this one. (7) Mines and Magic will make it interesting...Robby Albarado gets the call. (8) Emmzy will be the likely favorite and nothing wrong with Brian Hernandez Jr doing the piloting. (1) Grace's Treasure completes the superfecta.

SELECTIONS -- 6-7-8-1

Race 10 -- PresUAEC-- $100,000 Grade 1 -- 1 1/16 miles  (Arabians)

(1) Paddy's Day gets Calvin Borel and has been first or second his last seven times out. Respect and hope for a decent price. (6) Sand Victor actually beat Paddy's Day last time out and Corey Lanerie climbs on. (5) Thess is Awesome will contend for the lead and may have enough to hold on. (4) Lady Ha Ha  leaves the fillies only affairs and takes on the boys.

SELECTIONS -- 1-6-5-4

Race 11 -- Claiming -- $8,000 N2L -- 1 1/16 miles

(9) Scarecrow looks the best to Scott in this wide open lower level claiming closer. (2) Alabama Slim hopes to "roll, Tide...roll" past these in the stretch. (4) Say Hey Kid gets off the turf but should handle the dirt just fine. (8) Burley Blaise comes in from Ellis, where he just missed last time out for trainer Ian Wilkes.

SELECTIONS -- 9-2-4-8

Results from 9/17/16 -- Handicapping Heroes

The Handicappers tried their luck at Churchill with four races yesterday.

SCOTT HARRIS was the best...selecting three winners, three place horses and a show horse...give him two exactas also over the four races sequence. Out of the 15 horses he picked that ran (he had a scratch) seven hit the board for a nice 47% in the money percentage and 20% winner percentage. GIVE SCOTT 20 points on the day.

ARCHIE KAREL was Florida State...compared to Scott's Louisville...in terms of performance. He had 15 runners go to the gate and had a winner, a second and two thirds. No exactas for Arch. He ends with a 33% in the money effort and 6% winner percentage. ARCHIE ENDS WITH 8 points on the day

PAULIE picked a horse to win...in each of the four races. None of them did. One of them did scratch,

****************************************************************************************************

In the overall points battle, SCOTT still holds a big lead...367 to 324.

CHURCHILL STARTS FRIDAY!

The September meet of Churchill Downs starts Friday! We are glad to be back handicapping races at the Downs and discussing the track!

TEN THINGS WE'LL KEEP AN EYE ON

1) Jockeying for the lead. A great group of riders, trainers and owners descend upon the Downs. Lanerie, Leparoux, Hernandez, Jr., Geroux...the names will be there. Who will win the September meet?

2) Downs After Dark. Always a special night at Churchill...we can't wait to see what promotions the Downs has in store.

3) A Super Saturday on the 17th!  Three Grade III races in the Iroquois, Pocahontas and Locust Grove...plus the Open Mind...combine that with Louisville Football in the same day! Free General Admission and fun!

4) Our Handicapping Heroes battle.  Scott has an impressive lead over Archie as we return to the Downs...can he keep it up? Listen to the show Saturdays at noon on WCHQ 100.9 FM and on the internet at crescenthillradio.com Download the WCHQ app also!

5) Beat Joe! Track handicapper Joe Kristufek had a 29% win slate during the Spring meet. We think our guys can do better than that.

6) Cheap beer Thursdays. We'd like to see this promotion include hot dogs again. Nothing better than a beer and a dog while picking your winners. Gates open at 4 p.m. $1 from 5-8 p.m. for a cold brew.

7) Borel back! One of the best ever to ride the rails at Churchill...Calvin Borel...is back riding again. Will the Churchill magic continue?

8) FAMILY FUN DAYS! Sundays are special at CD....with stick horse races, face-painting, pony rides, inflatables and a petting zoo. Bring Grandma and the kids!

9) FULL FIELDS? We hope the days of 5-6 horses per race are gone. More horses = bigger payouts...(and we all want to make a little money, honey!)

10) CHILI-FEST. The Downs used to have a great Chili cook-off festival. We'd like to see that return...maybe in September. I'd even volunteer to be a judge...

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM 9/10/16

The Handicappers gave it a good try Saturday at the Kentucky Downs late pick four and we have a clear winner here!

SCOTT HARRIS gave us 16 horses to consider and 8 of them got paid...for a decent 50%. He provided (4) winners, (3) seconds and (1) third. He also selected (3) exactas. His point total for the day lands him at 26. He also laid out the late Pick 3 and 4. Congratulations on some fine handicapping, sir!

ARCHIE KAREL had 17 horses for us to ponder and 6 of them hit the board. He had (3) winners, (3) seconds and (1) third.  35% for Archie. His point total was 17 for the day. Arch had one exacta hit for him.

SPANKY laid out 11 horses over the sequence. 5 of them finished in the money...a 45% on the board percentage. (2) winners and (3) second place finishes. Two exactas as well. He ends up with 15 points.

PAULIE gave out 3 horses and "the all" button in the last race..so we'll call it 13 horses in all. He had (3) winners (2) seconds and (1) show. That's 46%. Add in the automatic trifecta and exacta for him in the final and it comes up to 18 points.

In the points race overall, Scott still leads...increasing that margin to 347 over Archie at 316.

**************************************************************************

We DO extend to Archie a huge congratulations for Sunday. He is a part-owner of ARTFUL UNION
who won the third race Sunday at Kentucky Downs...in a photo finish... at odds of 9-2!!

Hmmm...will we see this one at Churchill?

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM 9-3-16

The Handicappers took on the first day of Kentucky Downs and the four stakes races that were 7-10. They had a few success in diagnosing the full fields and tough competition.

SCOTT HARRIS gave us 16 horses that he thought might return money. Out of those, six hit the board for a 37.5% success rate. When you look at (12) total spots for payment actually available and the best he could have done being 12 for 16...that is 50% in the money spots available. He had (2) winners, (2) second place runners and (2) shows. In addition, he picked (2) exactas.

GIVE SCOTT 16 points for the day.

( Could this possibly be a picture of Scott trying to convince one of the entries to run well for him so he can maintain the points lead and capture the day? )

ARCHIE KAREL didn't quite mirror Scott's success. Out of his 16 picks, only five returned a payout. The Arch ends with a 31% success rate. Out of those, he had (1) winner, (2) place and (2) show finishes. No exactas for him.

HE GETS A TOTAL OF 7 points for Saturday.

( We see Archie here with lovely mate Tina celebrating on their 27th anniversary.. This is moments after Archie mortgaged the house to place show bets on all his picks and realized that he hadn't paid the restaurant bill yet...)

PAULIE provided four horses he thought might win. None of them did...I had (2) seconds and (2) thirds. A perfect example of why I am NOT in the points battle with these guys.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

In the overall points totals, Scott stands at 321. Archie at 299.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

You can hear a replay of the show at the link below. Due to a technical glitch at the studios, only Scott's portion of the show was actually heard live. The staff and management of WCHQ 100.9 Crescent Hill Radio apologizes for this communication breakdown...and Archie segment has been added to the archives and this clip. (We stress that the show is for "entertainment purposes" only. Maybe the digital processor heard Archie's picks and decided they were pretty sad and deleted them....machines, meh.)

******************************************************************************

The guys head to Franklin, KY today to handicap races 7-11 on the first day for the summer meet for Kentucky Downs. It is quite a challenging card, with full fields

SCOTT HARRIS gives it to us this way:

Race 7 -- KENTUCKY DOWNS LADIES TURF $350,000 1 MILE

(2) CASH CONTROL gets the top nod here. Solid pace setter is 8 for 16 lifetime wins and has been no worse than third in her last four times out. (9) MIZZ MONEY has battled Cash Control several times in the past and has won a couple of them. It's the "if you play this one, you have to play that one" theory. (1) SHE'S NOT HERE looked good for Victoria Oliver last time out at Del Mar. A dangerous closer. (8) SECRET SOMEONE will be flying at the end with regular jock Robby Albarado...will she have enough time?

SELECTIONS -- 2-9-1-8

Race 8 --  THE KENTUCKY DOWNS JUVENILE $350,000 7 FURLONGS

(5) ANCIENT WARFARE was impressive in a Saratoga Md Sp Wt and is out of Mark Casse's barn. (3) HAN SENSE has been bullet working since his win in the Iowa Cradle at Prairie Meadows...Florent Geroux rides. (2) ZUNINO won her Arlington debut and gets local favorite Brian Hernandez, Jr on top (8) HOT DAD is another Michael Maker trained that shouldn't be overlooked.

SELECTIONS -- 5-3-2-8

Race 9 -- THE KENTUCKY DOWNS TURF SPRINT $350,000 6 1/2 FURLONGS

(7) TOOWINDYTOHAULROX invades from the West Coast and has won last two of three. (2) UNDRAFTED is a deep closer that Edgar Prado has come in to ride. Dangerous. (4) ALMASTY won the Commonwealth at Churchill last November and Jon Court returns as the rider. (10) ISLAND TOWN tries turf for the first time and drew Brian Hernandez, Jr's interest to pilot. You could get a huge price here.

SELECTIONS -- 7-2-4-10

Race 10 -- EXACTA SYSTEMS JUVENILE FILLES $350,000 7 FURLONGS

(6) LULL gets the nod here with Christopher Clement shipping in and Brian Hernandez, Jr accepting the assignment. Throw out the last. (10) FOREST CIRCLE has been training well  for his first turf effort. Out of ARCH. (2) SOUTHERN SIS tries these for Mark Casse. A dangerous closer. (7) CAROLINE TEST comes over from Ellis where he really hasn't done anything wrong. Adds Florent Geroux.

SELECTIONS -- 6-10-2-7

****************************************************

ARCHIE KAREL looks to stay hot and has reviewed these with the following recommendations:

RACE 7

(2) CASH CONTROL
(3) SUSIE BEE
(1) SHE'S NOT HERE
(4) NATURAL WONDER

RACE 8

(5) ANCIENT WARFARE
(6) PARLOR
(10) PRADOS WAY
(11) COLD SNACK THIRTY

RACE 9

(2) UNDRAFTED
(8) REGALLY READY

RACE 10

(6) LULL
