Handicapping Heroes -- Results from Saratoga 8/26/17

The Handicappers tackled the guaranteed $1 million Pick 4 at Saratoga yesterday and sacked the quarterback, so to speak....taking it down....along with both Pick 3's, three of the four exactas and two of the four trifectas. It was a day where the favorites actually did pretty well in Races 8-11 and Mike Smith finished either first or second in the three races he rode during the sequence. Here's how the numbers break down.

PAULIE had 16 horses for you to consider and 8 of them finished in the money. Three winners, two places and three shows. He hit two exactas, a trifecta and one of the Pick 3's. His Best Bet (Idaho) did not gt up for him, nor did his value play (Girvin) but his jockey of the sequence (Joel Rosario) did win the 8th race. PAULIE finished the day with a total of 36 points.

SCOTT saw all 16 of his selections leave the gate and 8 of his got paid. He had all four winners in the sequence, a second place and one third place. He had an exacta and trifecta. Scott also hit both Pick 3's and the Pick 4. His Best Bet (Drefong) won the 9th. race but he also had (Girvin) like Paulie for his value play...who faded late. Scott's top jockey (Jose Ortiz) failed to win in the sequence. SCOTT finishes second on the day with a total of 42 points.

ARCHIE put 16 horses up and 9 hit the board. He had four winners, two seconds and three thirds. Two exactas for him and a trifecta. He hit both Pick 3's and the Pick 4 as well. His Best Bet of the Day (Drefong) got it done for him but his value play (Irap) could do no better than third. Mike Smith was his Top Jockey of the sequence and had his picture taken twice (Races 9 and 11). ARCHIE easily wins the day with a nice 65 points.

OVERALL STANDINGS:

...we have a new leader...

ARCHIE -- 427
PAULIE -- 417
SCOTT -- 349

The Handicappers gave you a few longshots, a few favorites and basically sunk the canoe at the Spa yesterday. Scott always says "We can pick the winners but can't pick our payoffs" and yesterday did have an even money and 2-1 shot start us off the winning early...but 7-1 and 6-1 closed the sequence and we handed them to you. If you played along with us....your wallet got fat.

Handicapping Heroes -- Saratoga and Pacific Classic Results from 8/19

The Handicappers took on the late Pick4 at Saratoga Saturday and also tossed in the Pacific Classic. Maybe it was because Scott was absent, maybe it was just bad racing luck or it could have been poor handicapping...but Paulie and Archie didn't turn in exactly spectacular performances. It happens sometimes...and especially at  "the Graveyard of Favorites" -- Saratoga. Here's how it went.

PAULIE had a total of 18 horses break from the gate in the five races. Out of them, eight hit the board. He had two winners, four seconds and two thirds. He also had a exacta and trifecta. No Pick3 or Pick4. His best bet didn't hit the board, neither did his value play or his top jock of the sequence. A pretty pitiful PAULIE performance with 21 points.

ARCHIE had 19 runners try to win. He had eight hit the board. Arch had three winners, three seconds and two thirds. Give him two exactas and two trifectas. No Pick3 or Pick4's here either. His best bet and value play failed to win but his jock of the sequence (Javier Castellano) did pick up a win. ARCHIE takes the day with 37 points.

CUMULATIVE TOTALS

Paulie -- 381
Archie -- 362
Scott -- 307   (Note: We gave Scott Paulie's totals since he was unable to participate. He probably would have done much better.)

It goes to prove to us once again that every day at the track isn't always a winning one. We do have some phenomenal days at the site but Saturday turned out not to be one of them. We did see some great racing, though and the Pacific Classic was just that...where Collected remained undefeated and held off Arrogate and Accelerate. I am beginning to think Arrogate just doesn't like the Del Mar surface...he has lost twice in a row there. Will he go in the Breeders Cup Classic out there this fall? Probably...but I'll side with others if he does.

EVER WISH YOU HAD THAT BETTING SYNDICATE TYPE OF MONEY?

It would be fun to have $10,000 or so just laying around that you could use to go deep in a Pick 6 sequence....like those syndicate conglomerates do, right? They had a mandatory payout Pick 6 at Del Mar yesterday and I played a $24 ticket that hit four of the six races. No cigar there.

It's a $2 minimum wager...so I also, just for fun, gave myself an imaginary $10,000 bankroll and decided to see if I could take it down. Here's how I sequenced it:

Race Six - Four horses. Moonshine Memories, Tyfoshi, Dr. Ann and One Slick Chick
Race Seven - Six horses. Liam The Charmer, Itsinthepost, Monster Bea, Ashleylovessugar, He Will and Hunt
Race Eight - Four horses. Collected, Accelerate, Donworth and Arrogate
Race Nine - Three horses. Dangerfield, Americanize and Edwards Going Left
Race Ten - Five horses, Con Te Partiro, Dream Dancing, Beau Recall, Tapped and Bernina Star.
Race Eleven - Three horses. Jabber Now, Powder and Laynee.

The math was 4x6x4x3x5x3. It equals $4320. You multiply that times 2 (the amount of the bet) and my total cost was $8620. I had enough left for a weekend in St. Petersburg Beach if I wanted. Or to fly out and watch it live at Del Mar. Isn't imaginary money great?

The horses in bold print above won. The Pick 6 paid $20139.80. Sure, I could have put that $8620 on a 2-1 shot and gotten back about the same...actually a little bit more...based on a $6 payoff on a $2 wager...but I would have had no coverage in the race and I'm not sure if I was confident enough to do that with any of them. I likely would have chosen Americanized or Ashleylovesssugar and gotten dusted. Here are the payouts to win in each race...based on a $2 wager.

Race Six - $9.40
Race Seven - $8.80
Race Eight - $8.00
Race Nine - $5.40
Race Ten - $15.20
Race Eleven - $8.60

When we talk about getting sufficient coverage in a race, it's usually good advice. Sure, no long-shots bombed the sequence (the highest win odds were 7-1) but you can build those longshots in...if you're not afraid to put in a few extra dollars in a Pick 3 or Pick 4. I had a few in the sequence above. They didn't win...but if they had, it would have boosted the Pick 6 payout.

Going deep can be profitable...as we have seen above. A late Pick 4 in that sequence (.50 variety) with my numbers would have cost $90. It paid $320. A nice return.

Sometimes, we worry about saving $8 or $10 dollars per investor and end up streamlining things and then end up NOT winning a sequence because we threw a horse someone liked out in order to save a  few bucks. It's happened to me and probably happened to you. Of course, there are NO guarantees you going to always win. We all know that -- (unless you hit the "all" button in every race). By the way, the "all" button in each race of the Pick 6 would have cost you $2,108,106.

We always recommend here that you wager responsibly. Know your monetary limits, stay in them and don't go "chasing" if you're way down on the day trying to get even. There will be other days, other cards and other chances.

Anyway, some thoughts and a bit of fun. Anyone want to pony up $500 and start a syndicate? We get 20 folks and we are in business. (Yeah, I thought so...) Don't call me, Paulie...I'll call you.

I'm going out and spend my imaginary $20,000.

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from Arlington 8/12/17

The Handicappers tackled the late Pick 4 at Arlington and, although they didn't bring it down...they did have a good deal of success with nailing the late Pick 3 and providing some very profitable exacta and trifecta suggestions. Here how it shook out:

ARCHIE had eight of his sixteen picks finish in the money. Two winners, three seconds and three thirds for him. He also had an exacta in the final leg. His Best Bet Keystonetovictory ran third, his Value Play Grand Jete also ran third . His top jock of the sequence Julian Leparoux failed to win, though, in the four race sequence. ARCHIE FINISHES THE DAY WITH 17 POINTS.

PAULIE saw nine of his sixteen picks draw money. He finished with two winners, three seconds and four thirds. Give him two exactas and two trifectas on the day as well. His Best Bet Deauville finished a disappointing third, his Value Play Ghost Hunter did not hit the board and his top jock of the sequence was also Julian Leparoux...so no cigar there. PAULIE FINISHES SECOND ON THE DAY WITH 26 POINTS.

SCOTT got seven of his sixteen suggestions on the tote board. Three won, three placed and one showed. He scored on two exactas and two trifectas...plus nailing the late Pick 3. His Best Bet Dona Bruja ran second. His Value Play Sensitive failed to hit the board but his top jock of the sequence was Irad Ortiz, Jr. who won on Dacita in the 10th race. SCOTT WINS THE DAY WITH 33 POINTS.

Leparoux was disappointing on the day with just one third place finish and three out-of-the-money rides. Postulation surprised us all in the opening sequence (Race 9) with a win. A shipper from Delaware...maybe we should have considered his six length win in a 50k stakes race up there last out....but, honestly, there were better horses to choose from and the horse was 1 for 6 since last summer and beaten by Bullards Alley and Ghost Hunter...runners on yesterday's card. Sometimes, it can be the jockey change...J.A. Vargas, Jr. hopped on board for the first time. He came in from Parx to ride and it was one of two mounts he had on the day.  Veteran DRF handicapper Marcus Hersh did make Postulation his top pick in the race...

The winning jockeys in the sequence (Vargas, Joel Rosario, Miguel Mena and Irad Ortiz) all shipped in from other tracks and don't regularly ride at Arlington.

Check these numbers out. $1 exacta pays $71.80. .50 cent trifecta returning $173.45. Pick 3 gets you $295.25 on the .50 cent wager. All profit makers, all enough to make you a winner on the day and all available here....FREE...at Handicapping Heroes.

CUMULATIVE TOTALS:

Paulie -- 360
Archie -- 325
Scott -- 286

Handicapping Heroes -- Results from 8/5/17

The Handicappers took on the challenging late Pick 4 at Saratoga and, although they did not take it down, they did quite well in picking horses that finished in the money. The downfall for all the guys came in Race 10...when none of them came up with morning line 15-1 winner THUNDERING SKY...out of the George Weaver barn and ridden by Rajiv Maragh. A scratch of the #2 SASSY LITTLE LILA (who all three picked) sent the handicappers scrambling for a replacement horse...but none of them came up with the eventual winner. Saratoga proved once again that it is the "graveyard of favorites"...with only two of the four favorites in the sequence getting home first. Let's see how the guys did!

SCOTT HARRIS gave us 16 runners to look at and out of those...eight made the payoff board. He had three winners, three seconds and two thirds. He also picked two exactas and a trifecta. His best bet (GUN RUNNER) did hit the line first, but his value play (TEQUILITA)  ran third in the 8th race and his top jock of the sequence (LUIS SAEZ) did not win in the sequence. SCOTT FINISHES THE DAY WITH 34 POINTS.

ARCHIE KAREL picked 16 horses in his handicapping efforts and nine of his finished in the money. Archie had three winners, three seconds and three thirds. He also had two exactas and two trifectas. His bet bet of the day (NEOLITHIC) did win the 11th. race but his value play (WAR STORY) was fourth in the Whitney. He did have top jock JOHN VELAZQUEZ get a win for him in the final race. ARCHIE ENDS THE DAY IN SECOND WITH 48 POINTS.

PAULIE also provided 16 to consider and 11 of his returned money at the window. He had three winners, four places and four shows. Give Paulie three exactas and two trifectas also. His best bet (NEOLITHIC) won but his value play (TU BRUTUS) must have taken a side trip to the Spa infield for a beer and dog. His top jock (JOSE ORTIZ) came through in the 8th race for a win. PAULIE TAKES THE DAY WITH 52 POINTS.

Trifectas that pay $349. Exactas that triple your four-horse box investment amount. Jockeys that win and profits for the day. That's what you get here at HANDICAPPING HEROES and what you'll find each week! At no cost or fee to you. Just read the site and listen to the radio show.

in the overall standings:

PAULIE -- 334
ARCHIE -- 308
SCOTT  -- 253
