HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM CHURCHILL 6/23/18

The Handicappers took on the challenging late Pick 4 at Churchill Downs Saturday (Races 8-11) and although they did not take the prize down...they did have some nice selections in the sequence. The 9th race proved to be a tough one...Archie and Paul couldn't come up with any of the money-winners...but, thanks to some help from radio personality and Gold Room services agent Kristina McManigell...they were able to stay "alive'  until the final race of the sequence. They, unfortunately, left out the winner, despite having the horse in their on-air selections.

As they learned, sometimes leaving a horse "out" of a sequence to save a few dollars can cost you big. They also ignored "the Tommy-Boy" theory of going "deep" in the final leg of the Pick 4. That's a handicapping/wagering strategy learned again. Maybe they'll pay more attention to that in future ventures.

Here's how they did:

PAULIE gave you his 16 horses and had two of those "scratch" in the sequence. His remaining 14 got him one winner, three seconds and three thirds. He also had a exacta and trifecta in the four race sequence. NOT A BAD EFFORT FROM "THE PAULSTER" AND HE ENDS UP WITH 17 POINTS.

ARCHIE also ended up with 14 runners and had a pretty good showing as well. Two winners, three seconds and three thirds. He also scored on two exactas, two trifectas and a superfecta. ARCHIE WINS THE CONTEST BETWEEN THE TWO WITH 29 POINTS.

Since Scott was unable to participate and it was too late to get a "fill in" for him...the points today did not go toward the cumulative totals. If "he's out" next week, we'll solve that by getting a "stand-in" for him.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM CHURCHILL 6/16/18

Wishing a great Father's Day to all out there. It's Dad's Day, do what he wants this Sunday!

The Handicappers fired away at the very challenging middle Pick 4 (races 6-9) at Churchill Downs last at Downs After Dark and had some successes. With such talented and big fields, there were a few differences in opinion and...although we were able to build competitive Pick 4 and Pick 5 tickets, the fates knocked us out of the proceedings in the 8th race...when we let a invading shipper who hadn't won in nine months and who had never run at Churchill beat us.

That's handicapping. Sometimes the best effort at analysis and study don't produce a winner.

Here's how the Handicappers did:

ARCHIE had what many would consider a very good day given the difficulties of handicapping this sequence. He had (3) winners, (3) seconds and (1) show. Add (2) exactas, (1) trifecta and (1) superfecta and he wins the competition. The Panera Proletariat profited with a total of 27 points.

SCOTT threw everything he could at the card with his selections. He also carded (3) winners, (2) places and (2) shows. Ring him up for (2) exactas and (1) trifecta as well. He grabs second place on the challenge. Mr Pool Shark Harris ends with 24 points from his highly classified and secret location.

PAULIE also did his best but couldn't match the top two finishers. He did manage (2) winners and (2) shows. Not the best of rounds for Professor Paulie...the horses simply weren't listening to him, one might say, and he staggers home with 8 points

DAVID gave it the old college try but the numbers just weren't cooperating with our guest handicapper. No wins, (1) place and (3) shows. The runners obviously didn't listen to or ignored his selections on Handicapping Heroes Radio. The Horse Capper will tell you Belmont is his track anyway...he puts 5 points on the board.

Scott also provided bonus coverage on the first five races yesterday. He did extremely well! He picked the winners in all five races! He also had four seconds and four thirds. If you followed Scott's lead early on the Churchill card...you were hitting and putting money in the pocket!

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM BELMONT 6/9/18

The Handicappers tackled the Pick 4 at Belmont (races 8-11) that ended with the Belmont Stakes on Saturday and had a good showing. They gave you the winners in three of the four races...the 10th race stumped the boys with the #13 winning...but it was a good effort that was capped by Justify leading wire-to-wire to remain undefeated and capturing the Triple Crown. David Levitch filled in for Scott Harris and did well in his second visit with us. Let's look at the totals:

PAULIE offered sixteen horses in the four races and ended up with three winners, one second and two thirds. He also gave you one exacta. Not the best performance for "the big guy" but some days they just don't fire. PAULIE PLODS HOME WITH 15 POINTS.

DAVID detailed sixteen horses he likes and of those, he got three winners, two places and three shows. He also nailed an exacta. DAVID GRABS SECOND PLACE IN THE POINTS TOTAL WITH 18.

ARCHIE saw his sixteen picks break from the gate and predicted a total of three winners, two seconds and two thirds. He also gathered two exactas and a trifecta. ARCHIE TAKES THE WIN WITH 22 POINTS.

People approach playing the Pick 4 in many different ways. Yesterday, I heard of a couple of successful ways people used to nail the $639.25 payout on the 50 cent wager. The 10th race was a toss up in the eyes of some and hitting the "all" button for it worked for a couple of guys...the winner went off at 18-1 odds and, in the words of one lucky winner...

"I singled Justify in the 11th race, took 'em all in the 10th, picked out two horses I liked in the 9th and played the Ortiz brothers in the 8th (who ran first and third) to create a $26 ticket."

Another approach that was successful involved jockeys. "Bill Walker" (it's what we'll call him to guard his identity) explains his winning theory:

"I had Mike Smith and the Ortiz's in every race they rode in. I also tossed in Julian Leparoux, Edgar Prado, John Velaquez and Ricardo Santana, Jr. each time they rode. They're my favorite jockeys. My ticket was an expensive one ($90) but I cashed!"

Horse race handicapping. People approach it in many ways.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- POST POSITIONS FOR BELMONT -- WILL ANYONE BEAT JUSTIFY?

The Belmont Stakes post positions were determined today and JUSTIFY gets the #1 slot. Despite the naysayers who don't like where the Baffert trained contender ended up, the rail at Belmont will just make it a bit easier for Justify to go to his pace-stalking, near the lead running style and Mike Smith has broken from the rail on rides more times than LeBron James has made jumpers. And the #1 hole has produced more winners than any other post at Belmont

The question is, can any of the other nine contenders take him down?

I think one can rule out FREE DROP BILLY, RESTORING HOPE and GRONKOWSKI right off the bat. They may be nice considerations down the road in other stakes races in 2018 and beyond but nothing in their running lines or in their potential indicates that they'll be in the winner's circle Saturday. It is very hard to predict a top-three finish for any of these three.  Let's look at the others.

VINO ROSSO  was one of the "wise guy" picks for The Derby but barely turned in a top ten finish. He did take the Preakness off, which means he should be well-rested. Todd Pletcher thinks he'll like a longer distance. John Velazquez is one of the best on horseback and "Vino" did run quite well in the the Wood Memorial. That may be enough to "justify" 8-1 odds and he's one I'll use in the "gimmick" bets. On top? It would be a shock but, I suppose, possible.

HOFBURG is another horse that got considerable speculation as a "price horse" in Kentucky and has demonstrated a closing kick. That may hinder him in New York, where more than a few think maintaining a closeness in the early going and being a speed horse improves your chances. I think he'll pass a few tired runners at the end but see him no better than fourth. 9/2 odds is optimistic, in my opinion.

BRAVAZO has gotten better, it seems, each time he's gone out. Sixth in the Derby, second in the Preakness. If "The Coach" can figure out how to get in front of Justify and stay there, I like his chances...especially with cagey Luis Saez in the saddle. That's also part of the problem.

Just how do you get in front and stay in front of Justify?

I'll use him in all exotics and, at 8-1 or better...wouldn't be a bad across the board attempt. That being said, I do like others better. He made a "go" of it against Justify in the stretch but couldn't get him. I honestly don't know if he's got another effort like that left in him.

TENFOLD.  "Daddy" Steve brings him back for another try at Justify after the third-place Preakness finish. I do believe that he may be the second-best horse in the race. A bit of racing luck could get him to the winner's circle. Espinoza retained the ride and maybe do better on a dry surface. Who knows, maybe they ALL do better on a dry surface but I'll go out on a limb and say he'll be second best in all probability and if things fall apart, he maybe, possibly, remotely has a chance to win. 12-1 early odds make his an intriguing option.

BLENDED CITIZEN. OK, he won the Peter Pan. Tracked an early pace, went four wide and roared through the final furlong to win by a length. A mile and an eighth. Can a closer beat Justify? I guess we'll know soon enough. The 2 for 10 recent record, though...Kyle Frey on board and the 15-1 generous early line have me thinking possible filler in the exotics than one to put on top of exactas, trifectas and superfectas. Doug O'Neill is a great trainer but I must side against a possible win here.

NOBLE INDY. The Derby was a clunker, no doubt. That Louisiana Derby win in March was something special, though, and Javier Castellano has done more with less in his career. The question goes back to speed. Can Noble Indy track the pace, grab a lead like he did after a half at the Fairgrounds and then hold off a couple of determined last-gap and prolonged charges at him? I'll take a chance at 30-1 to say I think he's got a shot at the money and, although probably not a winner, could make for a nice fill out in the "gimmicks" and add price. Yep, I'll include him.

So, in summation...I think it's JUSTIFY and Mike Smith's race to lose. The PP doesn't bother me. And, if it's rainy and slop conditions...well, guess who won the first two legs of the Triple Crown in the off-going? It'll be interesting to see just what he can do if he gets a fast track, right?

So...we get to THE EARLY THOUGHTS ON "PLAYS?"

How about a $1 exacta box on 1,3,7,8,9,10 to start? $30 in cost and could be huge if #1 (Justify) doesn't get in there. Others included...#3 Bravazo, #7 Tenfold, #8 Vino Rosso, #9 Noble Indy and #10 Blended Citizen

Also, I'll suggest  a $1 exacta "wheel" with 1,3,7 on top and 8,9,10 on bottom but I probably won't play it. I don't like to play "wheels". You could "turn it around" I guess. I just stay away from wheels.

A trifecta suggestion is for $1 with 1,3,9,10 on top...1,3 7,8,9,10 next and 1,3,7,8,9,10 on the bottom. This will run you $64 for a $1 dollar wager.

Finally, a superfecta possibility is 1,3,9 with 1.3,9,10 with 1,3,7,9,10 and "ALL" for fourth.
Figured at a $1 wager, your total comes out to $189.

I'll look at three of the four I've laid out here and possibly adjust as the race gets closer.  $283 seems a sizable amount, I know, for three bets in a ten horse race where there's likely to be a even or lower odds-on favorite...but the adage goes "you have to spend money to make money" and...since I've been playing "my fellow horse-players" money pretty much since Derby...I'll risk giving a bit back but hope to make more.

It's important to remember a couple of things. Bet with your head and only what you can afford to lose. Also, there are no guarantees in horse-racing. I'm OK risking giving $300 back of profits for the chance of doing much better. After all, a $1 super in the Derby of ,6,7,8/,6,7,8/,6,7,8/ALL returned $19,000 + and cost less than $200.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- RESULTS FROM CHURCHILL LATE PICK 4 -- 6/2/18

The Handicappers gave it their best effort and had some success in predicting the late Pick 4 during Downs After Dark on Saturday night at Churchill Downs. They combined their picks and included racing analyst Kristine McManigell in a bit expensive but very profitable Pick 4 wager that paid  $472 dollars. Any time you can triple your original investment plus some is a "win" and they successfully took down the final four race sequence. Basically, they had the equivalent of hitting a 2-1 shot.

A fun night under the lights at the Twin Spires! Good to see throngs of younger folks listening to the music, watching the light show, socializing around the paddock and ground floor apron and enjoying the races. A few scratches in races knocked out a few of the Handicappers' picks but that can happen in racing.  Let's see how the boys did!

PAULIE had 13 of his original 16 picks proceed to the starting gate. Out of those, he had two winners, a place and two shows. He had a lot of fun participating in a "SHOW pool" with five other patrons that reached over $60 before it died.  A bit below his usual success rate as of late but he managed to gather 10 points on the night.

SCOTT also ended up with 13 of his 16 breaking from the gate. Scott delivered three winners, a second and two shows. He pulled the group through and kept them alive in the Pick 4 with one of his picks in the 9th race. "The bouncer" grabbed second place with 13 points.

ARCHIE also had 13 of his 16 in the post parade. Under his new alias "Bill Walker", the bread king gave out three winners, a second and three thirds. His turning point was the 10th race, where he hit the exacta, trifecta and superfecta. "The Mayor of the Gold Room" wins the day with an impressive 23 points.

Once again, what is offered here on these pages was successful. The Handicappers made you money if you bet their selections. It's what we do here. All free.

HANDICAPPING HEROES -- SELECTIONS FOR CHURCHILL DOWNS 6/2/18

Night racing comes to Churchill Downs this Saturday and the Handicappers are ready for what looks to be a very challenging late Pick 4 end to the evening at the Twin Spires. It's a laser, lights and neon showcase after dark at Churchill tonight and with music in the grandstand pavilion, it should be a fun time. The Downs after Dark is a fun showcase and quite different than daytime racing in terms of crowd attendance and entertainment value...it'll be a younger bunch out there tonight --so be sure to join the fellas out there as we mingle with the Millennials and Gen X bunch .

Now, for some Handicapping from the Heroes. They're taking on Races 8-11 and have been on fire lately, so let's see if the good prognosis work continues.
